2022 GX or Pro ?
Current Build - 2019 Pro with sliders, full skids, retrofit bi xenon headlights, ditch lights, TRD exhaust and Intake, URD MAF calibrator, DD Sport fog lights, LED interior lights. Westcott front spacers and eibach rear springs sitting in the garage ready to install. Front end XPEL PPF, rest ceramic coated. Had the front coil overs replaced to the 2021 version under the TSB.
I would say I’ve underutilized the functionality of the Pro up to this point, but as our daughter gets older we intend to continue exploring and adding remote camping to our adventures. It’s a huge step for my wife as she considers a 3-star roughing it. I have used all the the additional off-road features of the ORP/Pro, but sparingly. I didn’t realize how much I would miss some of the creature comforts like BSM or CarPlay, but road-trips in the 4R do require more effort to drive than my wife’s X3. When we are traveling with the intent of remote exploration, obviously the 4R is the only option and it is comfortable enough on long trips 6+ hours.
With the bolt-ons I have, my first thought is to upgrade to the 2022 Pro and transfer everything over. Dealer markups have started pushing me to look at alternatives. Enter the GX now that CarPlay has been added. With an MSRP of 60ish for the only trim/color I would buy - Nori green special edition, it’s at essentially the same price as a new Pro. So for me, option 1 would be new Pro in black. Option 2 GX in Nori. Option 3 new Pro and wrap it in Nori green because like rush is terrible and I’d like something a bit different.
What do you think community of strangers?

The GX is more comfortable on the road but mileage will be slightly worse due to the V8. I would not swap what you have for the same thing (another Pro). So if I had to get another vehicle out of the 2, I'd go with the GX.

GX has substantially more HP & torque--that'd be a decisive factor for me.

My Pro gets 16mpg mixed if I’m lucky and I really make an effort to conserve fuel.
I agree with your logic, though a key consideration for me are the transferable mods. I truly like my Pro, would just like the safety sense and CarPlay.
I also like the concept of the multi terrain cameras in addition to MTS and crawl control on the 22, something I couldn’t get on the GX special edition trim.

The GX might see 1 mpg less.
Safety sense isn't what it's cracked up to be. Lifts seem to cause issues and false warnings do happen. The cameras are as bad as the rear view so all garbage. For carplay you can always swap the headunit out.

I would stay with the 4R. I hate the barn door at the rear. But that’s just me…

Agreed....I've owned a gx many years ago, I disliked the rear door as well.
Besides previously stated mechanical and power differences, I think the 4r looks much better. The gx has a more feminine, softer look. Not to say when kitted out looks decent.

I say 2022 4runner.
Better resale value
Bigger aftermarket
Rear hatch rather than door
Get to transfer mods/bolt-ons
Having wheeled our 2019 a good amount so far: local desert trails, Moab, and a Mt Laguna snow country trip just a few days ago, i’d say the only downside so far is fuel range/fuel mileage.
I’m only getting 280-290-ish miles per tank, but i also only have 10k miles on the rig, so that might improve.
To help with that, i have a Victory swing-away double can carrier for an extra 10gallons of fuel (150 miles+\-) for a range of about 300-350 miles depending on terrain.
I feel like that is adequate for our needs at this point, and to date we’ve never even come close to needing our reserve.

You never felt that you could use substantially more power/torque?

This!
Life is too short to drive an uninspiring vehicle. I think Toyota missed the mark on the GX with the clorox-bottle styling. I'm sure the GX is capable, but when I see one on the road, it looks bloated and top-heavy. The 4R is more dimensionally proportioned comes across as rugged and purpose built, residual value is tops in the class. Based on your requirements, either platform will get you where you want to go....GX will be easier to find than the PRO. Good luck!

I think in its stock form, the GX is not the best looking vehicle. With the proper wheels/tires and removing the factory steps, it takes on a much more appealing look. The lack of availability for a new Pro, plus the mark ups are what have driven a wider lens view. I’m in no rush as my 19 Pro is great. I’d like to take advantage of the current used market and make a nice profit for driving 2.5 years and 27k miles. I’d essentially be receiving 5k over my purchase price on the low end if I were to find a replacement soon. Black Pros and green GX’s are about the same regarding availability. GX is a little easier and Lexus dealers are much more open to out of state sales.
I’m heavily leaning to the Pro, but I’ve read a lot of reviews stating how much more vehicle you get in the GX for such a low cost increase over the 4R, though most compare to the limited 4R.

I'm in a similar debate myself but currently have a 3rd gen at 412000km's coming from a previous 5th gen.
Been listening and looking for any info on the next gen GX and 4runner . Still really love the look of the T4R, the size and height is perfect and love that rear rolling window.
The GX has more creature comforts but still can't get used to its "look" and price here in Canada. +$80K. The 5th gen is getting up there as well here.

Initially regretted not doing 460 for a few thousand more, but after letting my purchase sink in, if I bought the 460, I’d be wanting a 4Runner.

Hi Anoob, Not once, so far, actually….And this is with a family of 5 and a full loadout. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely feel the difference between my 2.7 eco-boost twin-turbo f150 as far as bottom end acceleration, but never needed more torque/grunt either offroad or going uphill to Utah or backcountry San Diego.
I do have stock sized tires, and havent slogged it out in deep mud but sandy washes and mild/moderate mud/water/slush has been uneventful.

I find this extremely interesting, given that I'm currently looking to buy an off-road SUV. I've been considering either a 4R or a Wrangler but I should expand my horizons. Thanks!
EDIT: the Lexus doesn't have appear to have a locking rear diff, unfortunately. And the ground clearance & approach/departure angles aren't great. So no.
