Shutting down the engine upon opening the door to get in... Just to have to restart it again 5 seconds later is idiotic IMO, and very annoying. The aftermarket offers a much better anti-theft system that shuts the engine off if anyone attempts to press the brake and shift the car into gear without a key present. Allowing you to unlock and enter the vehicle first.

The way key encryption works on pts Lexus and Toyota
Key start stays running. So it has nothing to do with aftermarket or oem. It’s the way toyota is designed

I have a compustar system. It's great and you can configure them to what you need (remotes, range, accessories)

Yes, I understand that and how Toyota's encryption prevents a secure takeover with PTS. I however have a G-Key and not PTS, which is why I said it was personally a deal breaker for me.
When I inquired with my local Toyota dealerships, Toyota did not offer an OEM solution for my G-Key that didn't shut down my truck. Everything that they did offer was a non-OEM aftermarket solution. So unless that has changed recently, in my case and many others it does come down to OEM vs aftermarket.

This is a function of where we are in the 4Runner lifecycle. Their remote start was designed in the age of keys only and that's what you get.
My wife just bought a Bronco. It (like a Tesla) comes with an app which allows you to do all sorts of things, including start the car from anywhere (and no shut down when you get in).
To change the subject slightly, I think Toyota is showing they are late to realize how important software has become to cars. Tesla is miles in front but even our friends at Ford are miles from where Toyota is ...

i got a viper smart start...its pretty cool. lets you start and check on your car from anywhere, and track it if need be.
I added this to my viper 2 way security system.

Both, the product was terrible, it was advertised as a plug and play and was not, I had to use wire taps, plus the system itself was buggy and had tons of gremlins, it would lock and unlock my doors repeatedly and flash my high beams at oncoming cars while I was driving, and wouldn't even remote start when it was supposed to, and would start on the wrong button pushes. They repeatedly sent me new wires and chips and it never resolved my issues. I replaced 3 different modules before giving up and asking for a refund, they tried to work with me but also took days and weeks to respond and never had an answer for me. If you want to risk catching your car on fire and burning out your door lock motors, go ahead, but once I switched to Accessorides it plugged right in, and worked first try and I never looked back

Well my 19 4Runner has an app through my Compustar system which allows me to do so much more. Including start the car from anywhere, track the car, proximity unlock, remotely notify through app and fob of a break in, 3mi range with just the fob (Tesla and Ford cant do this), know the inside temp and status of the car...
So I think Toyota is in just the right place. Provide a far more reliable vehicle than any other and create software that's simple and basic, yet easily intergraded into other systems so it can always be customized to the individual and always upgradable.

If you know an aftermarket that doesn't shut down, please provide. This seems to be a Toyota thing. G keys shut down with the brake, push button shut down when opening the door. I've learned to deal with either.
I'm on my second Accesorides setup. 2019 with G key and 1000ft fob, worked great. 2021 with push button and added the 1000ft fob. Jury somewhat out. Everything's working but the extra fob gets the same range as the OEM fob, unlike on my 2019. Need to get off my but and give them a call.
Install had a few more steps from the G key addition. Not hard just more time. Watch youtube video first and you'll be fine. I had an issue with my 2019 install and they took care of me over the phone. Good company

LoL same here. I had issues getting the wiring harness under the steering wheel to sit flush so I could get the cover back on. Had to rework the wiring loom and cut the plastic dividers under trim. Took about 3 hours total.
