Anyone JUST replace all 6 stock speakers and 2 tweeters with taco tunes?
...and not upgrade anything else?
i'm not shilling for any particular vendor but they seem to have a sub $500 solution that with a minimal amount of effort you can swap out all the existing speakers with much higher quality versions that work with the current system.
the nice thing is you can add a new amp later as well as a subwoofer and even a new head unit eventually without rewiring any of the speakers.
for now i would only want to upgrade the speakers and then maybe consider an amp down the road.
very disappointed in the stock speaker sound. just dull and 'thuddy' even with the bass turned way down. embarrassing how cheap the stock speakers are.
anyone just upgraded speakers that cares to provide feedback about how they sound with the stock head unit?

Hmm i have no experience with the Taco tunes. but if they are just re-selling the OEM Audio Plus system for our vehicles then good luck!!
I placed an order with OEM audio plus November 17th for the full system, and dual dual subs. i had to acknowledge a 30 day lead time. which was fine.
They did ship out the component speakers to me as this was a gift for my wife. but no harnesses or amp. so i cant even use it.
Well as of the last email i received like 5 minutes ago, they are saying another 10-12 business days before the harnesses can ship. and they havent even mentioned the subs.
so more like a 75 day lead time i would imagine. this is super disappointing, and im about to bring up returning and cancelling the order. because i am way past the point of being excited about this now. i would rather spend the money on good suspension set up... lol.

I went with the 8 speaker setup from OEM Audio+. No harnesses or adapter plates were required. Everything went back in like stock. I also liked that the OEM Audio+ drivers (magnets) weren't massive so we could make the most use of the stock head unit without running an amp. I can get the door cards off in literally 2 minutes or less.
The sound improvement is quite noticeable. With some tweaking of the sound enhancements via the Spotify app and our phones, the sound quality is far better. The stock system is downright terrible. The drivers on the stock speakers are hilariously tiny. Toyota should be ashamed to put such crap speakers in these trucks.

the website says its using image dynamic speakers if that means anything.

Image Dynamics used to put out some solid stuff a long time ago, usually very high performance for the money. I'd see them being used in subwoofer competitions (which also makes me wonder if they might be too much for the head unit with out an amp)
Where are you seeing a sub $500 setup? I could have sworn when I was looking they were at least double that. I just went super budget and got PowerBass all around. HUGE difference with just the stock head unit. With ebay sales going on I think I paid around $350 for all 8

Anyone JUST replace all 6 stock speakers and 2 tweeters with taco tunes?
TacoTunes is not reselling OEM Audio+ systems. I have the TacoTunes 6.5” speakers in my rear doors and cargo hatch. I like them very much. Before I bought these speakers, I had some Polk 6.5” speakers in those places. They were 4 ohms and sounded awful. The TacoTunes speakers are 2 ohms and sound much better. For my front doors and dash tweeters I installed Focal 690 TOY. The door speakers sound pretty good - woofers only. The dash tweeters were garbage... and expensive garbage at that. I replaced them with some Infinity coax 3.5” speakers that are not plug and play... but they sound pretty good and add some mid-range frequencies that were missing from the Focal set. I kinda wish I had purchased the TacoTunes 8 speaker set from the start. I have a 2022 SR5 Premium and most of what I listen to is mp3 files streamed from iPhone via Bluetooth to carplay, if that is of any use to you. I have found that XM radio sounds horrible regardless of speakers, so I wouldn’t use that as your benchmark for checking the quality of your audio system.

I went this route too. Sound is much improved. Easy install because they are plug and play.

I'm considering buying a bulk box of sound deadener as well since I'm going to have all the doors off anyway.
Did you add some to the hatch too?

From the tacotunes website:
2 front speakers plus adapters, 2 tweeters, wiring harnesses and crossover gadgets total $250ish.
4 rear speakers; 2 doors and 2 hatch plug and play $210 ish
That gets me a complete upgrade for under $500 but the sound deadening sheets will run me another $130 or so and I would be dumb not to add that while I've got everything pulled apart.

I installed the OEM Audio +speaker/sub upgrade on my wife's 2021 Subaru Crosstrek. I ordered the system towards the end of May and it didn't ship until September and didn't complete the install until October because of missing parts.
Considering all the hassles and headaches of installing this in my wife's new Subi, I would not hesitate to install this in my future new 2025-2030 4Runner.

lol i think i understand your frustration.
its a good question; i'll definitely ask the tacotunes folks if all the parts are in stock and ready to ship prior to making a purchase. Oh and here's the breakdown that gets you out the door for under $500 unless i'm missing something. Everything seems pretty much plug and play:

Ultimately, the simple answer here is that anything other than stock is quite an improvement.
The Tacotunes setup looks fine to me. I probably would have gone with the setup to ($250 cheaper than the OEM Audio+ setup), but Tacotunes doesn't list the 2020 4Runner with the new 2020 headunit as compatible (it probably is). I just pushed the easy button and went with OEM Audio+ after seeing the difference it made in another friend's 2020 4Runner.

Did you do just the speaker upgrade? I have a 2019 Pro and I've modified the back for camping / travel so I don't want fuss with subwoofers or amps, but if the speaker upgrade improves things a bunch I might go that route + sound deadening.

thats what i'm doing. amps and subs cost as much as the entire speaker upgrade and since i can add them at any time in the future i'm opting just for the speaker upgrade for now. i have a feeling this will be more than what i need. i just want better sound quality; i'm not 20 anymore so i don't need a sub to unscrew my license plate like i had in my 98 ;)
