so complete history

bought vehicle @ 55,000 kms
drain + fill 3 litres trans fluid @ toyota dealership @ 75,000kms
drain and refill all 12 or so litres trans fluid by friend mechanic @ 100,000kms (fluid very black was noted)
gradual flush, used pump from tranny to circulate but did not drop pan.

so yesterday 143,000 kms this happens with the snow and i get the high temperate light on dash

so today mechanic @ tranny shop drops pan, cleans screen, drain + fill 5 litres of fluid.

NOW im driving home from mechanic, and it feels like its holding gears a bit longer than before but otherwise seems fine, until just before i round my corner to my place and it revs up almost like it "slipped" or lost the gear or something.

now i had my steel toe rigging boots on so i figured it might of just been the wieght of the boots too quickly on the gas pedal, so i park at home and have some dinner

right afterwards i grab my shoes and head out for a drive. now im a bit paranoid but the sound coming below not sure if it was the engine or tranny but it sounded strained idk how better to explain. And again it seems like the gears are holding a bit longer or almost straining to change but overall it seemed fine it seemed in turns of actually shifting gears.

so i turn home when im satisfied its all good and all of a sudden it slips or loses the gear and the CEL light comes on / trac off.

Now after doing research, its probably my NSS.

but is there a possibility my whole tranny is starting to go ?

i tow often in summer and some in winter, lots of incline in 4WD in snow, rock etc..

i def need a trans cooler but i hope its not too late fack
There is a process to check the fluid level for the 5th gen trans. It's a little complicated but not too difficult. For $370 they should have replaced all of the fluid which is 11.3 quarts. If the transmission was working fine before and is doing this after the shop procedure I would be a little skeptical and double check the fluid level. If the cel is on the ecm is throwing a code which needs to he looked at, an obd scanner dooggle with an app will show you what code it is. Do that and go from there.

So I called this morning and mentioned the nss, and they said they would check everything out today.

They just called back saying that they took everything apart (pan screen etc), even removed the nss and cleaned it a little. There wasn't any corrosion.

After taking it all apart they realized they were missing about 1.1 qts of fluid, they mentioned something about an air pocket.

He also said its hard to know how much fluid you have in there with no dipstick. I wanted to tell him why didn't you just ****ing use google lol

anyways i forgot to even ask what the code was, wonder if there is a fluid level sensor or something. i can call back on monday and ask.

gonna go pick the truck up soon, hopefully everything is all good now.

lol

Seems like the shop has not worked on 5th Gen or a sealed transmission which is not uncommon nowadays. Air pocket? not sure if they meant foaming or bubbles in the fluid. From what I gather after reading your post the shop seems to be somewhat incompetent. Hope it turns out alright.

ya what a sick joke today.

i called toyota dealer in town originally on wednesday to do the drain and fill and they said they were going to hook it up to those machines that heat the fluid then blast it through or whatever.

i told him i was going to look somewhere else perhaps for another opinion because this toyota dealer in town is always my last resort based on previous experiences and the guy on the phone at toyota gave me this transmission shops number said they were really good, worked on some of his older chevys so i took his word for it.

so now i gotta check the fluid myself tmrw, and go from there.

i cant remember exactly about what he said about the air pocket my mind kind of short circuited when he told me they didn't have enough fluid in there lol

truck did seem to shift waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better on the little drive i did today. like it was before so fingers crossed.

thanks for help gang

Even if they figured out the proper top off procedure, they didn't use WS fluid. You should change out the fluid completely, all 11-12 liters.
