I suggest that based on the high probability that the results would show nothing abnormal and give him "peace of mind".

If there was tons of bearing wear which i agree is not likely, I would want to know.

and like you said, most contaminants that cause wear come from the intake and poor air filtration. In "theory" all internal moving parts are all separated by a film of oil, so there should be no wear items (metal etc) that just flakes off.
Contaminants are mostly introduced through air filter / vacuum leaks and fuel system.

He was on the third filter at 17k. First filter ~7k, 2nd filter ~10k, 3rd filter ~300 miles. So it was three of the wrong filter before the issue was caught.

Yea, if $35 is not a big deal for his budget, it wouldn't hurt to have "peace of mind". If there aren't any obvious new noises, oil burning, or other signs I still think it's pointless and he should just move on and use correct filter in future.

There is some disruption of the hydrodynamic oil layer during operation, particularly on cold start up. Additionally, there is a decent amount of wear metals on a new engine as parts wear to fit.

Thanks for all the info guys.
I am not going to worry about it.
If I didn't stretch the last oil change to almost 10K I would not care one bit. Still I dont think it is a big deal at all even with the screw up. Most of my miles are highway so that also helps.

My buddy Sean had his first oil change at the dealer, since it was free. He did the second one and found that they had used a short filter too.

I seriously detest changing the oil on my 5th Gen. 4th gen took 15 minutes. 5th gen - an hour or so.

I can sympathize with you. A Toyota dealership did the same thing to my brand-new truck. It came with free oil changes, and it was freezing cold in the winter I felt stupid not taking advantage of the free services, although I usually do all my own maintenance. It probably went 4K with this configuration circulating partially unfiltered oil.

I complained loudly, but the stealership wouldn't give me any concessions like an engine warranty or anything. They offered me like six free more oil changes

I plan on keeping this truck until it or I die, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Wishing you the best for your engine.

It sounds like he went 7K on the first short filter, 10K on the second, and noticed the problem when installing the third.

Now I’m wondering if I should ask for my used oil filter when I get an oil change to make sure the right filter was installed.

But you wouldn't know until 5000 miles later...

When I was in high school, brought my dad's camry to the dealership for an oil change. I asked what type of oil do you guys use? Service manager said, "We use 20W-50 in all oil changes". The camry calls for 10W-30 on the cap. Needless to say I learn to do all basic maintenance myself then on.

Don't trust Amazon

There are certain things I would never trust buying from Amazon. This is one of them.

I've bought mine from Amazon but I buy them from dealerships, not parts places. I've got a 1999 Sienna and 2004 V8 T4R, never had a problem. I buy a half case at a time.

On the other hand, I bought one for the Sienna from the local dealership. 5,000 miles later I took it off and it was bone dry, filter element totally clean. I'm guessing the ball device that prevents back flow draining was stuck for both directions. So you never know. Stuff happens.

This same exact thing happened to me. Against my better judgement I let the dealership do the 10k oil change because it was free. (I had done it already at 5k) When I did it today at 15k I realized the shorter filter had been installed. I knew I shouldn't have let them change it .. never ever ever again will they touch my truck. Im sick over this but at least mine was only for 4,800 miles on a new truck.

So, I would inquire as to the reason they didn't install the filter by application!
