Cargo liner and/or mat for large dogs in 4runner
Question...Posted awhile ago and read the reviews and suggestions about riding with dogs but would you suggest a cargo mat (Weathertech)? Do I need them both or one or none ?

Hmm, great question. I’ve owned the Ruff Rugs cargo liner and the material is pretty thick so don’t use a cargo mat for my back area. If you’re hauling extra stuff like wood, equipment, kennel, etc maybe I’d go with a mat but again the Ruff Rugs material is THICK (double sided) so it almost feels like the surface leather couch back there. Haven’t had a problem with scratches with my dogs.

Interesting. Yes, not hauling anything but my dogs. What was the lead time with Weathertech because I’ve read others are made to order?

Yes, mine shipped next day and it was custom made. I ordered the custom side protection as well and they shipped next day. I had the entire liner within 3 days of ordering.

I use a Weathertech mat ON TOP of the Ruff Rug cargo liner. Agree their material is thick but I haul other things around and already owned it. Wouldn’t need it if it was just my dog. The custom liners tend to be more expensive but definitely worth the price.

Couldn't find a picture of the interior on my JKU I just sold.
What I did was take 2 4'x5'x3/4" thick horse stall mats from Tractor Supply. I laid them length wise across on top of the rear seats (folded down) and the other in the cargo area. Cut them to the floor shape. They worked perfect. Matting for long rides with the dogs in the back. Camped in real cold weather in the back. Insulation and removed any irregularities in the floor. Made dog hair removal simple just using my CO2 bottle and hose.
I will do the same thing to the T4R when it warms up a bit in the next few months.

I travel with 2 German Shepherds that shed a lot and can get very wet and muddy on some of our adventures. I purchase a couple 82x72 inch moving blankets that cover the entire rear cabin. I think they cost me around $15 each and can be easily vacuumed or washed as needed.

I have the Weathertech rear liner on top of my CanvasBack liners, it's overkill, but it definitely helps protect the CanvasBack liners and keeps stuff from sliding around as much

If this is similar to canvas back then I recommend something back there to help the dogs from slipping. We tried just the liner with our bullmastiff and he would slide all over the place. We ended up putting a rubber mat back there so he would have more grip.

I am a huge fan of weathertech and have them in the front 2 rows. Some of the feedback below is really helpful and I have the same experience ........I went with a lower cost option for the rear cargo area - HUSKY- and its worked out well..........check this out
Amazon.com: Husky Liners 25721 Black Weatherbeater Cargo Liner Fits 2010-2019 Toyota 4Runner Standard Cargo Area (No 3rd seat or Sliding Cargo Deck) : Automotive
I like the way it provides protection for the sections where the rear tie downs are, and because it has raised edges, spills are never a problem. I have a dog blanket that I toss on top of the mat so that the dogs bed does not slide around.
I have an 85 lbs lab -- great dog and he has not destroyed it, so he must approve.
I can send photos is that would be helpful

I use a truck bed liner trimmed to fit, with a shorter piece to pull back to cover the bumper.

I picked up a stall mat from Tractor supply - think it was on sale for $20 bucks. Trimmed t to fit in the back and it's been perfect for anything.

I have canvas back liners all over my trunk area. They're fantastic, however, my dog slides around a little on them if I dont have has dog bed back there (I got a memory foam dog bed from amazon that perfectly fits in half of the trunk - next to my big ol' dometic cfx75dzw fridge).

Ah crud.... your advertisement almost got me. Good work going after both Subarus and 4Runners. We're both in need of a good option.

Wow... Even the responses are fake! ksuv23, 2011suvhello, AND odogvus1999 are all fake and appear on both websites with almost the exact wording.

Sorry, didn't read the entire thread but I haven't heard of a brand or link to rubber mats. Sorry if i missed it.
