When a transaction occurs, sales tax is levied.

On top of that there are DMV fees to do the registration, recording of title etc etc... The fees are based on the purchase price of the vehicle. These fees are usually collected by the new car dealer (or used car dealer if you are buying a 2019 from a dealer) and forwarded to the DMV.

Annual DMV fees I think are pretty much the same. It's based on the value of the vehicle, it's weight, and how much it pollutes (this pollution bit I'm assuming, I did not fact check this).

Dealer shows all the DMV purchase nonsense on their websites...reminded me of the old days when buying Private Party and fudging the sales price to get a lower Sales Tax amount.
mainly concerned about the difference in the annual fees, but at this point it's moot, since we are emotionally locked into a new one...it is what it tiz, as they say.

California's registration process can get a bit complex. Sales tax and DMV fees can vary depending on the purchase price and other factors.
Annual DMV fees are indeed based on the vehicle's value, weight, and emissions. It's always a good idea to verify the specifics with the DMV or a dealership to get an accurate estimate. You can even check out with your local DMV for more precise info. They might have insights from others who've recently registered their vehicles in California.
And yes, those old days of fudging sales prices for lower taxes definitely bring back memories!

Do you have yearly emissions testing in California?

On a new car you have 6 years until they start emissions tests, then it’s every two years.

If you're a California resident, the difference in registration fees between a 2019 vehicle and a new one can be noticeable, especially since newer cars generally come with higher fees. California’s registration fees are based on the vehicle’s value, so the newer the car, the higher the cost. For a 2019 car, you might see a bit of a drop in fees, but with a new car, you could pay more. It's worth considering if the newer car is worth the extra cost. You might find this helpful blog for more details on vehicles and related topics: https://www.villageautо.ca/blog/ .

We have residences in California and Montana. 4 of our 5 vehicles are registered in Montana. The 5th is a 2005 Honda Accord that I use to go 3 miles to the train station where I take the train into LA for work, when I’m down there. Employer pays for the train.

In Montana, for cars older than 10 years you pay a one-time registration fee of like $200 and you are done, no further annual registration fees.

I just paid $695 for my 2019 Nightshade registration (2024). High gas and high reg cost. CA doesn't like 4Runners

Holy cow! Almost 2 years ago, I paid $240 for my 2019 - for 2 years. Curious to see what it'll be like later this year when I renew...

Yeah, California registration fees can be brutal, especially for newer vehicles. When I registered my truck, it was way higher than I expected, and they base a lot of it on the vehicle's value. The hit on my 2021 SUV was almost $600, which was tough to swallow.

If you're looking for ways to cut down costs, some folks register their vehicles in Montana due to no state sales tax and lower registration fees. 1$ Montana offers a simple way to register vehicles, including RVs and ATVs, legally without dealing with California’s insane costs. Might be worth looking into.

California wants you to drive EVs. Yet EVs have driven up costs for the rest of us because they don’t pay highway or sales tax on fuel and their expensive repair costs have driven up everyone’s insurance.

No so where I live (Utah). Utah has a surcharge for hybrids and EVs to make up for the missing fuel tax collected.
