New: TRD Pro or ORP?
Hey, I’m new here and looking at ordering a 2022 4Runner to replace my 2010 Highlander. I’ve been doing my research on the differences between the pro and ORP but would love to hear your thoughts.
The vehicle will primarily be a family hauler for my middle and high school age boys. I live in Hawaii and am at the beach multiple times a week. I want the 4wd option in my new vehicle because many of the beaches that I go to have busted up roads and sand parking lots. I likely won’t be doing full on sand driving .
I love the look of the pro and the fact that I wouldn’t have to put in the time and effort of having mods installed. However, I’m concerned that there will be more body roll with the pro versus the ORP with KDSS. If I have to, I can get the ORP and find somewhere here to do the light mod work I’m looking for.
Thoughts?

I have a 2013 Trail version which is now called the ORP. Save the money of a Pro and get the ORP. Buy new surfboards with the savings.
It will do fine on the beach and light off road you mention. Even the OEM tires will be OK until time to replace. I don't think KDSS is worth the extra cost.
I have had mine on many trails, sand and snow and it does very well with AT tires.

The kdss thing is overblown on this forum IMO. Get which one you want.

Opinions vary, and there are plenty in each camp.
Imo the Pro is grossly over priced for what amounts to a set of shocks(though they are nice) and a nicer climate control dash. In my area, Pro’s are $70k+, and ive seen as high as $77k, and they sell at those prices. I bought my ORP-KDSS, all blacked out, and added Pro grill, 3” toytec coilovers, kdss spacers and control switch, full arb skids, bumper, winch, 285 tires with a matching spare wheel, led lightbars, intake, exhaust, a snorkel, and a roof top tent…and i still havent matched the Pro price tag yet. Imo, that’s utterly insane.
Mark me down in the pro KDSS camp, too. It makes a difference for articulation off road and driving with a load on road. KDSS gets a lot of hate from people who either dont have it/couldnt get it, or more often dont understand it.
If you are going to keep the truck entirely stock, and can find a pro without an obscene dealer mark up, maybe it becomes a more compelling option. Id drive a kdss truck and a non kdss truck back to back to see what kdss does around corners. Then drive a pro and see the difference the shocks make, and go from there. You can replicate the shocks when you lift; you cant replicate the KDSS system.
Just my $.02, and you’ll get plenty of folks who say exactly the opposite.

I went with a PRO and love it. Yes, PRO's do command a price premium, but you'll get that back if/when you decide to sell. The last couple of years there's been plenty of buyers paying a premium for any 4runner, including ORP's!....try to find a dealer that sells for MSRP. Some folks choose to wait on the mods until after the warranty period has expired, Toyota typically doesn't like to warranty issues related to aftermarket suspension or wheels that have been installed by the end user. Good luck and post up some pics after you take delivery!

Might come down to how long you want to wait as well. Pro will take twice as long, if not longer than the ORP to arrive. I'm on month 3 for a base OR.

I have a deposit on a ORP but for completely different end-use.
In your case, the 3rd row is not available in TRD trim, only the SR5, that might be a consideration for you. You mentioned kids and they have friends.
I’m retired and been there, done that.

Thanks! I don’t need 3rd row seating, that’s what my highlander has now and it doesn’t get enough use to be a consideration.
I want the pro but I’m concerned that the drive on highways and around turns doesn’t perform as well as others with KDSS. Can anyone speak to their experience with this?
I would love to test drive and make the call myself but there are no pros or even ORPs on the lots here. There is nothing new and all of the pre owned 4Runners are SR5s with mods that are priced comparable to the pro at MSRP.

Also, I want the interior of the pro/ORP. I’m not a fan of the fabric and I would love the moonroof. That’s why I won’t buy the pre-owned 4Runners here.

Would recommend the Pro for residual value and good daily driver. I bought a 17 SR5 prem new and installed the TRD Pro 5100 suspension, it leveled the SUV and the driving was better. It removed the nose dive and body roll.
After my wife bought the SR5 prem. I was looking for a TRD Pro 4runner but the wife told me no and we ended up with an audi A7. I really liked the 2017 cement grey color , and do wish we would have bought it. Residual value for the pros are tad higher than the other trims.
General consensus here is if you plan on buying an aftermarket suspension then go with the ORP edition.

I got the Pro knowing that I would make mods, but it would be some time. I was also able to purchase just as Covid lockdowns were hitting so I got it just under MSRP.
Would I pay markup for a Pro probably not, but I think the big appeal for Pro decision is just having something different that not everyone has (although there are many pros). Some may reason that is just vanity, but we all do that to some degree that.... is why we are all not driving 4 door econo boxes. So get the one that gives you wood. A 50k vehicle is a purchase of the heart and not the mind. Otherwise you will always think..."I should have got the....."
my previous car was a Merc E550, I contemplated the E63 and my wife (now X) approved the E63. I always kicked myself for not getting the E63.

For what it's worth, we got a used SR5 Premium (2019) and it handles everything I could want=NOT into heavy off-roading anymore (Did the Mojave Road the first year it was open in an FJ40). We used to surf (50 years ago!) and used a '51 Ford Victoria, including beach driving. I also did moderate off-roading in a '68 Toyota Corona. Took a 4K trip through the SW last October and we hit a blizzard (out of Reno), sand and wind in Manzanar, Old Highway 66, sand and wind through NM and southern CO, snow and heavy rain in the Rockies.
Don't over think! Get what you like, not what others like.

The big difference on the Pro is the suspension. That's not going to matter at all on sand or rough roads. And having owned both a KDSS Off Road and and now a Pro, the Pro is much bouncier and rolly-polly.
I think the bigger problem with the Pro is finding one. At this point dealers are quoting 7-10 months if you order. Non-Pro models are half that wait.

Thanks, that’s what I was looking to hear about. I’d prefer less bounce and rolly polly if I can.

Does the ORP automatically come with the KDSS or is it an option?
