I think I recall someone having either a quote from Toyota or some data at one point a few years ago. It was roughly 1/3 of sales being limited model. More than I had expected. Just not a well represented group on this forum.

For me, this lack of excitement about the Limited is great news. I was able to actually source a Limited a few weeks ago and buy it without a markup. Just want to say “thank you” for depressing the enthusiasm around the Limited ;)
These are all great trucks. I owned a 2015 TEP/KDSS. That was great too. Living in the NW the AWD/full-time setup on the Limited was the factor that tipped me.
Again “thank you”.

It's competing in a category that has way nicer, more comfortable, and more fuel efficient offerings for similar money. It's also not that great looking compared to it's competition or the other 4Runners.

Again, “thank you” for continuing to suppress enthusiasm for the Limited. Have fun having to shift into 4wd to get out of a wet grass field.
Competition? Old school, simple, n/a, rock solid reliable, comfortable, spacious/box, zero pretense. I LOVE we still have hydraulic steering. I’m weird. I don’t want turbos, or start/stop, or hybrid/assist. LMK what’s out there. For me it was this or a GWagen.

And it doesn't come with some of the things that I think would make it a lot more compelling. KDSS and a V8/Turbo6. If it had the 4.6 v8 and KDSS no one would think twice about it justifying the price or its fit in the lineup.
If my wife were buying a 4R, it's the one she'd go for. And I think it would serve very well as an all around SUV. When I was shopping for mine, if it had KDSS I likely would have gone for the Limited for the nicer interior and then cut up the plastics as needed. KDSS is the biggest odd choice to me, yeah it adds a few inches of articulation - but it's biggest benefit is on the highway. Seems like a natural fit for the Limited trim.

I REALLY want to see how this new-for-2022 TRD Sport model does.
I had high hopes they’d give it 22” wheels so I’d have something legitimately Toyota to swap onto my Nightshade, but none such luck. 20’s.

If I got a Pro, the first thing I’d want is to do an AWD conversion, get real leather seats from a limited, dual zone climate swap, all of which is very labor intensive and impractical. Instead I just bought my limited… if I WANTED to look like a Pro, it’s only a roof rack, grille, and lift. First two parts are a couple hundred $$$ each and the lift would get rid of X-REAS.

Love to pull that lever...lol...while the Limited is AWD, I do like the reliability of a lever over the selector button. Had many a "push button" 4wd actuator fail over the years.
This is first "synthetic" leather I have had and I am interested to see how it holds up. Every car I have had in the last 20 years has been leather....some hold up well and some dont. Some show wear more quickly than others...I have noticed in my experience, Merc leather is thick and holds up well. Toyota in minivan was decent, acura seems to crack.
Dual Zone auto climate is standard on Pro models (at least from 20+)

Big +1 on the odd choice of 20s. The good news is that there isn’t much weight penalty (3lbs). My strong opinion is they did it for looks for that target market segment. They are trying to do a mini “Escalade” thing or something. I quickly stacked my OEM 20s in the shed and am now running 17” TEP wheels+tires. Looks and drives great. Improved the ride.
Agree that X-REAS is an odd choice. I’ve always been fascinated by systems like this. Fully mechanical. Great at minimizing dive/lean. Previously used on more performance oriented cars (Audi RS4 as an example). I will say that given my time in a KDSS TEP and the Limited:
Ride: TEP better
Handling: Limited better (similar body roll and better chassis control w/the Limited)
Brake dive: Limited much better
Grass field, snowy roads, light gravel road: Limited better
Off-road: I don’t. But, TEP WAY BETTER
And the leather, the climate control, the JBL, are all nice to have w/the Limited. It still doesn’t feel “luxury”. Just a super simple and well built truck. Not at the same level as my old GX but it does feel like it’ll last.
Again, they are still in the same zone of “lumbering BOF SUV” which has huge charm. The points above are splitting hairs.

I paid $49,692 plus sales tax and doc/reg fees for my 2022 Limited non third row seat.
I curious to hear what you think is better at that price point, that's similar to the Limited 4Runner.
Seriously. I'm curious. Not trying to bait you into an argument.

Softex in my 4R has held up much better than any leather I've owned. Including my RX350 that we bought the same day. Softex wears like iron. It still looks new. Wipe it down and you'd never know it's almost 8 years old. You probably couldn't tell it from new after a good cleaning. Leather looks like worn leather. It's not bad. But I'd take softex over leather even if it costs more next time. For an outdoor vehicle, it's just a better material.
I'm okay with the lever or not. I generally like having it for reliability, but Toyota does a pretty good job on solenoids too. So I'd be okay either way as long as it works reliably. My biggest thing is that Toyota continues to keep the solenoids external wherever they can. It really helps to lower long term costs and to be able to engage it in the field if the solenoid fails.

Grand Cherokee/L, Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride, to name a few, all offer much more higher end interiors, better tech, better mpgs, better ride. I understand the reliability piece of the 4Runner, but otherwise it's at the back of the pack for just about everything. It's absolutely a nice car, but it's not even close to the others. Myself, and a lot of people on this forum, prefer our 4Rs because it isn't those others, but that's not most people.

A used T4R Limited! I'm not kidding either.
I paid ~$24K for my 2010 Limited w/ 3rd Row and it had 120K+ miles on it at the time (4 years ago in the Portland, OR area). I didn't want to spend double that on a new one as the minor interior and exterior adjustments/tweaks didn't justify the price as the drivetrain was still the same for all (non-2WD) T4Rs 2010+ with only slight differences in 4WD selector/mode switches and that kind of stuff. Due to these things being good for 300K+ and some cases even 400K+ in mileage when properly cared for, I wasn't concerned about getting something low mileage at all and saved myself tens of thousands of dollars by going with a used model with almost exactly the same options and amenities as a brand new one.
Granted, yours is 12 years newer and with 150K fewer miles on it than mine has right now, but for myself, I wouldn't be willing to pay more than double my original purchase price just for something with 0 miles on the odometer and an only slightly upgraded interior/exterior. I'll wait for the 6th Gens to drop before I consider paying over what I paid for mine.

Are we sure we want to go there? Maybe on interior, but Ford EcoBoost and cam phasers, Kia engines blowing up, and the Jeeps with the same air suspension issues that plagued Range Rovers (on Quadra-Lift equipped models) are enough to drive me back to Toyota.

While you are over there putting your Limited in a class by itself because it's more reliable, simpler and an older platform, the other 99% of the mid-sized SUV shopping world will just compare it with all the others out there with better tech, nicer interiors, better ride, and better mpgs. I get it. I like my 4R for the same reasons you do, but we aren't the majority of the shopping population. People recycle their cars before 100k miles now. I see 100 Grand Cherokees a day here to a couple 4Runners. People don't buy for the same reasons a car specific enthusiast forum does.
My sincerest apologies for not being a huge fan of the front end of the Limited as well. Especially compared to other 4Runners. You can pull me off the mall curb any time you like! I don't want to get my tires dirty in the grass.

Well, to be fair it's only the other 95% of shoppers (at least for 2021).
