Towing a TRD PRO behind a RV

I plan to do a road trip in the fall. The thinking is to rent an RV and explore Washington,Oregon, and Alaska

Does anybody have experience towing a TRD PRO behind an RV..........?

Thanks

Can not do it with a Toyota. The rear wheels turn the transmission even with the transfer case in neutral. Removing and replacing the drive shaft may be too much of a hassle.

When did this start? Some time ago, both Jeep and Toyota both used New Venture / New Process transfer cases and Jeeps could be towed flat.

I’m sure there’s some specifics but is this a 5th Gen thing, a specific transfer case (2WD/H4/L4 vs H4F/H4/L4 of the Limited) or…?

The problem is that when you put the transfer case in neutral, The location where it disconnects the main input shaft is downstream of where the oil pump is in the transfer case. So it doesn't spin the oil pump. And the fluid level and the transfer case is not full enough at the normal fill level to oil the bearings of the output shaft. So you end up spinning the output shaft driven by the rear axle without oil. You can do it for short distance is no problem, you can't do it for long distance without risking damaging those bearings in the output shaft of the transfer case.

It's no problem if you disconnect the rear drive shaft. It's only four bolts at the flange. Front shaft can stay connected. You can probably do it in about 2 minutes with the right tools. And then you'll need to strap up the shaft.

The 4Runner has had Aisin Seiki Transfer cases for as long as it has existed.

The TRD models all have the Aisin Seiki VF2A.

Rent a light travel trailer instead.

I pretty much live full time in a Class A. When looking into my options, a trailer was the best option. I have a tilt deck trailer and it's a cake walk.

In the past, some 4Runners with a manual transfer case shifter and neutral position could be towed four down albeit against Toyota's advice.

There are people on irv2.com that have towed this way for thousands of miles but maybe something changed over the years. Maybe I am thinking of a 4th gen.

IIRC, Toyota has been advising against 4 down towing for a very long time but it was possible on select models. The prior generation Lexus GX and 80 Series Land Cruiser come to mind as detailed examples I have read about.

Yes I have a 1993 FJ80 and I know that can be towed --------I may take that instead of the TRD PRO. Its just more truck than I need, and FJ80 only has 35,000 miles on it, so its not my first choice --- but the trailer rental could be a fall back.
