Parts That Work Just As Good and Cost Less

What are some good parts that you have found perform just as well or maybe even better than OEM and cost less?

Over the years I have run all sorts of wipers as Im a bit OCD when it comes to the windshield and wipers making noise. From cheaper blades to high end contour blades spending $40+

For the past 4 years Ive been running $7 Michelin blades from Wal Mart that work flawlessly!! They last about 2yrs which is good with the amount of driving I do and the fact Im usually using them to clear mid and dirt. Unbeatable value in my opinion that I figured Id share with others.

Brake Pads. I’ve generally gotten 40-50k out of oem pads. The last time I decided to go with Oreilly store brand for $30. Half the price as OE and I have gotten about 40k so far and no issues. I expect to change them in <10k

Excluding the obvious like suspension parts the only thing I can think of is the ECGS teflon bushing needle bearing replacement.

Edit: and stainless braided brake hoses.

Ahhh yes stainless brake lines and needle bushing. I wish I would have had the time to go with stainless when I broke one of my lines after dropping caliper during spindle replacement Parts That Work Just As Good and Cost Less I ended up getting stock line from part store and used large socket to bend it in the s pattern like stock was.

I have not had good luck with aftermarket pads. I tried Napa "Gold" pads on my 2010 4R & only got 15000 miles out of them. Now I stick with the OEM.

Been using the NAPA MaxDrive with heavy duty boot option for 35,000 miles. It does bind at full droop compared to my OEM passenger CV but I've got extended travel front shocks.

Looking at the website, looks like they don't have the maxdrive version anymore. Instead they have 4 kinds which I don't know much difference about. Anywhere from ~$65 to ~$117. And a new extreme environment one for $200+

None the less, still happy with my current NAPA axle.

I’ve had the same experience with pep boys house brand. Very dirty but man, years and years, and tens of thousands of miles between 3-4 different vehicles.

Plan on trying a local parts store for brakes when it’s time.

Maxdrive were made by Cardone I think. There are only about 3 aftermarket CV manufacturers/remanufacturers. I've had good results with Cardone ones. You can tell who actually made Napa stuff by looking at the warranty doc it usually says either the company name somewhere or has a phone number that will tell you when you google it.

You can probably find the same axle still at RockAuto, for cheaper too. Napa has a better warranty that's the only difference from what I've gathered. The Napa part numbers are pretty much the same so easy to figure out.

Cabin air filters. 2-pack on amazon for less than the price of an OEM replacement at the dealer. Same material and super easy to swap out.

Just so you know, generally speaking. O'Reilly is the harbor Freight of auto parts. NAPA is generally the best aftermarket in my experience. OEM is still the way to fly for most parts.

Not to dissent from the general direction of this thread - but considering today’s typical breakdown of shop labor and parts markups - labor is such a huge part of any type of job that learning to DIY install something frees up your budget to pick just about ANY brand of part you want.

Are we talking about FURTHER reducing cost by comparing brands when we were already planning to do the work ourselves?

Would you gain any travel if you were to have long travel CV axles as well?
