I didn't say cracked. I said broken, as in broken completely between where the flexplate bolts to the crankshaft, and the torque convertor bolts to the flexplate.

Is that what has happened to the OP's 4Runner? I don't know without inspecting the vehicle. But I replaced a few broken flexplates back in my consumer car repair days.

Edit: However, if the OP can re-start the engine, then the flexplate is not broken.

Rear diff issues would still be drivable or at least moveable in 4hi and it wouldn't lock up the tires in park. When you put in park the rear parking pawl engages the transmission output shaft. The fact that that locks up the drivetrain downstream from there tells me the issue is between there and the engine.

I don't know how you'd diagnose the transmission beyond that without pulling something apart or having a diagnostic software.

The torque converter is a fluid coupling that very rarely would wear out or break to the point where it wouldn't move the vehicle or give at least some forward motion. Unless a catastrophic internal seal blew out or something.

Taking a random guess that you should put no value on - My guess is some solenoid is not functioning or the transmission oil pump line pressure regulator is bad or something like that that's not engaging the clutches. The ECU is designed with failsafe systems that work around almost any individual solenoid failure to make sure it will still drive. So maybe that doesn't fit. Hard to know much more without better info from diagnostic checks.
The pump is a good theory or the loss of trans fluid in the radiator also possible but the low fluid isn’t really possible I checked the ATF return line I disconnected during flush and no leakage checked pan and plugs no leakage. The underside of my truck is completely dry so unless the temperature gauge trick via jumpering obd ports 4&13 and getting solid “D” when in park somehow was not correct temp and when I pulled check plug. That is the only way fluid is not at correct level.

I also saw more than a few customers who complained about similar symptoms, and the problem was the transfer case was in neutral.

Yeah was about to say it wouldn't crank the engine and most likely sound... not great.

I replaced my 3rd gen one as prevention when the transmission was dropped for a seal replacement. A little rusty but looked fine at 220k or whatever it was.

Hopefully turns out to be low fluid. I dont want to start the preventative replacement thing with the 5th gen.

Seems like there should be some codes to look at. Air in the system would be my guess.

I've seen both. A lever that was moved into neutral by accident, or a kid playing in the parents vehicle moved it, and the parent didn't realize it had been moved. And T-cases with actuators that were either left in, or got stuck in neutral.

Last question I promise but did you have that 1GR-FE "whine" some people have? Which is hard to locate the source and Toyota says is all fine and normal?

Sounds sort of like a turbo whine from tge engine while you're driving and changes with rpm but it's actually coming from the front of the transmission, from the pump probably.

@magnetic.gry.rnr - I've got no idea what's going on but can you update this when the dealership figure it out?

No I have not experienced that.

Toyota just called me and said I need to replace the transmission and offer no clarity or reason other than the symptoms I described. I will be going down there to speak with them today and will update y’all.

The A750 is a pretty stout transmission, which has a history of being very durable and tolerant of hard use, and even abuse.

Did you own this 4Runner from new?

No I didn’t buy it new but is in immaculate shape and everyone who has ever looked at it from a mechanical perspective has always commented to me about how good of shape it’s in.

Well, it's difficult to say whether it was abused to the point of near failure, just from looking at a vehicle. If someone grossly overloaded it, got the transmission way too hot, then changed the ATF and sold it, the abuse might not be readily apparent.

Just a little story: In the early 90's I was working as a Master Tech at a Toyota dealer. One sunday I'm out riding my motorcycle, and I see a nearly new 2nd gen 4Runner pulling a large boat that easily weighed 10k lbs with the trailer. The 2nd gen 4Runner had a 3.5k lb towing limit...

The following work week what should I see, but the same 2nd gen 4Runner in the shop with a severely overheated and destroyed transmission. It still looked like new...

Hopefully the shop treats you well.
