Big difference between stock and modified. Between my roof rack, rear cargo molle panel, and random suspension noise... it can get loud. Roof rack is by far my biggest regret.

I don't think it's uncommon. As you read more and more threads on this forum, you will see clear patterns. Rear hatch rattle (electrical tape to the rescue). Hood rattle (try grease!). Fender liners (replace the clip!). Strange metallic clicks from ceiling, especially near doors (no systematic fix). Rear driver side passenger seat creaking over bumps (TSB, but only some years). Front window passenger side (various fixes). Plenty of posts on that kind of stuff.

It's all livable, but I'm surprised at how many I've had to track down and deal with (because I didn't want dealers making it worse), and the metallic clicking from ceiling I've given up on.

I assume it's like the needle bearing issue. A bunch of folks have it, a bunch of us don't.

I am not sure I like the sound of the TRD Pro exhaust yet...

Looking for a great sounding exhaust system without getting too ricey even in high RPMs.

Trying to figure out between Magnaflow and Gibson.

Or even for Magnaflow if street series or overland series would sound better.

Anyone have any insight? I'm not impressed by most videos on the internet.

I have a TRD PRO. Hated the exhaust drone on the highway. (which I drive a lot of) so I swapped it out for the magnaflow overland exhaust. At first it seemed like it was better. It still droned a little bit, but the overall tone was more pleasing i guess. But now that I've put some miles on it, i've come to the conclusion that I wish I had a stock quiet exhaust, hahaha. (Btw, I have a supercharger, and I still think a stock exhaust would be better lol)

Call me the odd man out, but I read comments about drone, and saw plenty of videos with the same comments, and was pleasantly surprised how mild the TRD exhaust was on my TRD Pro. I guess I'm jaded. To me, drone is resonance that digs into your ears, like glass packs on headers that dump under the seats. I have a big block Chevelle that has a little drone and lots of rumble, a C6 Corvette that has drone and plenty of bark, an old K1500 4x4 that has headers and cherrybombs, a Z28 with headers/catback, and a 4runner that sounds practically stock and barely audible next to any one of them. The TRD Pro is hardly noticeable. I guess I'm just used to loud cars so in comparison it's quiet to me. It sounds a little ricey, but not bad. I wish it was a little louder to be honest.

I'm actually with you; if you have it sitting in 3rd or 4th gear during an extended climb it can be a bit "droney" but nothing that really bothers me whatsoever. Up to about 2500 rpm I barely notice it.

Personally sounds way better than the Pentastar V6 which was in my 2012 Jeep Wrangler. That engine and exhaust sounds like crap (and after markets make it sound even worse).

TRD Drone

If you don’t want to scrap the system just put a quality resonator in the intermediary pipe. It kills all the drone yet keeps a mellow exhaust note.

Myself as well coming from driving Jeeps over the last 7 years, the 4runner engine/transmission sounds better, is tighter, and has more power. The 4runner to me rides like a rocket ship compared to my Wrangler, plus us is a smoother and quieter ride.

I wen t back to stock and am much happier. Took a road trip of 700 miles and was nice and quiet. If anyone wants my TRD pro exhaust let me know, has 600 miles on it.

Yeah, the 4.0L in the 4Runner doesn't sound great at high RPM but the Pentastar V6 was just THRASHY. Anytime I had to run the Jeep up in the rev range (often for long climbs out here) you felt like the engine was going to just break apart.

Being a Stellantis product, I ultimately was worried about this exact thing and ran at 84K miles as multiple problems were starting to appear.
