whoa whoa.. im grateful for cat converters... we'd all suffocate on the roads without them... fumes from burning gasoline is toxic as F

You wont need to tune anything because the MAF has fairly loose tolerances to accommodate most air, humidity, altitudes etc etc.. if youre not throwing a check engine light you're most likely fine..

oh adn as for the TRD accelerator.. dont expect gains of any sort other than noise.. i just messed around w/ it because it was a cheap experiement

There is a front facing flat funnel like air intake for, subaru's?
Sits on top of the radiator.
Seems like a couple guys have done it.

I'm not sure the MAF would be significantly affected by the snorkel to be honest with you?

Throttle body/engine volumetric efficiency determines how much air the engine can physically suck into itself. The MAF will calculate how much air is going through the intake tube itself post air filter. As long as the air coming into the actual air filter box is roughly similar to what factory expectations are (which I don't entirely see being an issue with a properly designed snorkel) then the MAF should be reading within it's expected ranges. While turbulence and air velocity might be affected pre-filter, it should smooth out going through the filter and the actual intake air tube where the MAF is installed because those are controlled spaces.

If it isn't reading correctly then you'll set a DTC for some MAF performance issue as the vehicle will try to correlate the MAF signal (input) with it's expected load/work and monitor it's AFR and O2 readings (output) to make sure it is working within it's desired fuel ratios and efficiency parameters.

I don't think I've heard of anyone in the 4th or 5th gen forums needing to "tune" their ECM for a snorkel install unless they were going forced induction? But I haven't been around as much as I used to be so I guess I could have missed that?

This would probably be the cheapest option to get rid of the stock half cone piece. Not sure it would help the amount of dust/debris though. You'd really want a snorkel for that

The brains are engineered specifically for the way the truck was factory built with set parameters. These are strict parameters and slight variations in the signal make big differences.
The location of the MAF downstream of the air filter results in the air flow being normalized by the filter. The snorkel will make no measurable difference in the MAF readings or the performance. Nor will anything you do to that intake area on the dirty side of the filter make a difference if it doesn't restrict it significantly or move the intake into the engine bay where the air temps would be higher.

A set of baffles like the OEM fender liner to deflect mud spray away from the intake port in the fender would be another option. Toyota designed it the way it was for a reason.

That's cool! I jacked my hood up in the forest so maybe I'll get the scoop hood although I like the flat one. Not much mud seems to make it in that area hmm 🤔 fluid dynamics is more complicated than most people think.

You are way over thinking this. First, the flow post filter will be effectively unchanged in terms of laminar/turbulent flow. Second, this is air, not water or more viscous fluid, Adding a couple feet and turns to the intake piping is going to change your pressure drop by like 0.01 psi... Third, the MAF sensor is just that, a sensor, and is capable of accurately measuring a wide range of flow @ varying temp, pressure, humidity, etc. Lastly, the ECU which takes the MAF voltage signal and numerable other variables to determine fueling is capable of operating in both open and closed loop and has short and long trims and will adapt ignition timing, cam advance, and fueling.

I've tuned a bunch of K20Z3's and am anxiously awaiting the capability for 20+ 4runners, but this is not a change that would concern me in the slightest. Pull the battery long enough to wipe the short trims, plug it back in and put it through it's paces.
