I have a '16 Trail with the regular run of the mill roof supports and crossbars. There is a 2022 OEM TRD roof rack listed near me on CL and I'd like to know if they are any good when compared to an aftermarket rack of similar design. I'm not looking for it to hold the world but would like it to be as sturdy as if not more so than the one that have now.




What do you think it's worth or would you pat for it given the price of the aftermarket racks?

there are going to be A LOT of opinions on this roof rack. visually it looks pretty slick but functionally there are better choices

the cross bars (and standard OEM ones) have been known to flex under load, something as simple as a cargo box can cause them to flex. also you have to mount longer items on the very top of the rack so they clear the highest rear cross support

the sturdiness of the rack will be the same for both the standard rails and this TRD roof basket. the crossbars are what you need to be mindful of

if you are purchasing for function and needing to carry, there are better options out there. since you don't need to carry really anything heavy its probably down to occasional use coupled with looks. looks are subjective so that's up to you. this rack works for many for the occasional use (non RTT, non overlanding etc.) but I think there are better options out there. a set of thule, yakima or even LFD crossbars are highly more functional than this TRD basket. I looked at purchasing that same rack and ended up purchasing a set of crossbars instead

for me I wouldn't pay much, reason being is I wouldn't get much utility out of it, I do like it for looks though, I think it looks nice. probably a couple hundred $ tops if I didn't need the utility of crossbars

^^^Agree on going another route. It all depends on what you need out of your roof rack. The LFD roof rails is the set I’m looking at and is a reasonable cost. Lower profile to boot. Last I checked, they had a week(?) lead time. Tons of install videos too.

For me, I don’t necessarily want to mess with the seal on the factory roof rack if I don’t need to. I won’t be carrying any huge loads up there.

Agree with what they said. I went with Victory cross bars and I drop on a Rola style basket when I need it. Minimal wind noise, much stronger than the OEM bars, and low profile. I also did not want to open up the factory roof seals, even though I'm sure it's not an issue once sealed back up right. The TRD Pro rack is not very functional compared to other racks, but looks decent. I have a friend with a Pro that surfs and he HATED the TRD rack for surfboards. He replaced with with a Prinsu and loves it.

Agree that the cross bars are the weakest link but there is a simple solution to that: just add some more cross bars. The OEM cross bars are spread fairly far apart so there is room to add more. They are readily available; the part numbers for just the cross bars are listen in the installation manual. I bought three more for my TRD rack.

With the added cross bars, the bottom layer becomes a rather flat platform which easily holds duffels and the like.

I really like the OEM crossbar look - it's low profile. I'm not putting a RTT or anything that heavy up there, maybe some mountain bikes, lumber etc. what I don't like about the OEM crossbars is that on standard roof rails they are somewhat curved, they don't lay flat like a thule or LFD bar. this creates a problem for me when mounting gear boxes or even wider objects I want to lay flat

this is my biggest gripe about those crossbars, I don't know why toyota didn't make them straight or straighter. do they lie flat on the TRD rack?

So, in short, this rack/basket is good if I'm looking for something stylish for occasional light to medium duty use as long as the price wasn't too high?

It actually works better for some things (e.g. bundles of firewood) and you can see in the thread I posted that things like maxtrax, boxes, shovels, etc. are all easy to mount.

Finally, you can buy extra bars from Toyota to create different layouts/support.

I like my Pro rack. I see then sell all the time for $350-$500.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting one of the 2 listed semi-local to me. Seller claims he's had it for a week, put it on his rig and I guess he doesn't like it. So, it's essentially new in box with a "test fit".

The TRD roof rack can have a problem leaking water into the cabin and staining the head liner. The factory sealing washers are a joke. Best to use a caulk around the mounting bolts when you install your rack. I used long life (50 years) silicone caulk but some people have said that silicone may damage the paint. I have never had a leak. You certainly want to use something that does not shrink.

If you buy a new kit w washers and bolts you won’t have a problem. Cost is about $20. If factory was a problem Toyota would have a massive problem on their hands.

The seller recommended I do just that and was even kind enough to provide the part # for the kit.

It's going to be a couple of weeks until I have it in hand (I live a few hours away from the seller so I had a friend who lives close pick it up) so I'll get the kit ordered in the mean time.

just to add to the feedback....it adds 5 inches to your clearance --- 77inches, not what is published by Toyota (72.5)
