Do mine (2019 SR5 Premium) about 5-10 miles each month or so. Just to keep lubed.

Yes! This is the exact thing that makes real 4WD superior to AWD. It’s proactive rather than reactive. On an AWD vehicle by the time the computer has detected wheel spin and gotten its act together enough to engage the rear wheels or apply the correct brake, precious momentum has been lost. AWD’s only benefit is that it’s more idiot proof (but we’re not idiots, right?)

4WD on pavement is fine if you don’t turn. Years ago I didn’t realize I had engaged 4WD in a push button shift system and drove at highway speeds 75 miles in July. Realized that I was in 4WD when I felt the drivetrain binding when I made a sharp right turn up my street. I owned the truck for another 17 years and experienced no issues with the drivetrain.

I don’t buy the practice of not engaging 4WD until you’re stuck. I’d rather not get stuck in the first place.

My T4R is put in 4WD each time I get on a dirt road, regardless of condition. Where I live, dirt roads outnumber paved ones. That has been my practice with all my 4x4 vehicles over the past four decades that I’ve owned them.

All my rigs have never given me issues with their drivetrains or related parts. Those I knew that never engaged their systems and then needed them found out the hard way that if you don’t use it, you loose it.
I agree with this too, it's better to have it on and not get to the point where you're stuck.

Also, I watched s Ronny Dahl video a while back, and he was talking about this. If you don't know, he's one of the Australian guys that goes out into really remote locations in the Outback to off-road and overland. He said they run 4WD even on gravel roads, because if you have to make an evasive maneuver or something, it's good to be in 4WD and have max traction when you need it.

One last thing guys. How about exercising the locking rear diff? I imagine that should NOT be exercised on dry pavement? Also, if it needs to be exercised, how much? I imagine not much at all?
I think exercising the locking rear diff is a good idea too. I have to admit, I'm less than consistent with exercising my 4WD, and have only engaged my locking diff two or three times in 3 years of ownership, lol. I need to get better about that.

You could do this on dry pavement if you don't turn, or in a dirt parking lot. Put it in four low, and lock the diff. Drive in a straight line for a few feet, and unlock it. It's just the locking and unlocking function that would theoretically need exercise, so you really don't need to drive with it on for any significant distance. The few times I've used mine, it's engaged easily, though. I have heard of people say that the the solenoid that actuates it can stick.

Well I had a fun first foray onto the trail in my 4Runner. I found a fairly legitimate spot to test out the crawl control. It sounds like being under water with a pod of whales. But it was fun to play with. The Predator steps will have to go…

I may be interested in buying them. And I'm local

It all depends though. The 4Runners more often than not, do not come equipped with them. There is a 4runner available for me tomorrow that has them equipped, however, I am thinking about backing out of my reservation. It's 3,500 over MSRP. It's not that bad a markup considering it has the two things I want most: Lunar Rock and KDSS.

But I am on a waiting list at a lot of places. So we shall see. But I definitely want those steps. As long as the black finish is not badly scraped, I would buy.

And FYI... dealers won't leave me alone. All these dealers were doing 7.5K to 10K markups. They laughed at me when I said I was looking for MSRP. They all said "4Runners sell all get presold even with 10K markups." Well, a week or two would pass and they ALL have been calling/texting me back, lowering their price. All of them. They are not selling as fast as they did 2 months ago.
