M 21 TRD Off Road Premium had the same play less than 5000 miles. I put the ECGS bushing and new seal got rid of 80% of that play, I didn’t trust the dealer to fix it were i am so i did it my self. I also had a slight vibration that started around 30 to 40 mph in 2WD & went away in 4WD. Now there is no more vibration in the diff.

I did notice the driver side axles sticking out about 2mm from the diff to the dust shield on the inner axle, i saw a video on youtube guy had almost the same thing he said he checked a few 4Runners at the dealer to compare and was the same. Other than the steering wheel shake once & a wile i think I’m god for at least 250 300 thousand miles.

When I was under the car, there was the same amount of play on the driver side and passenger side.
Any additional insight on if this is normal or excessive/unacceptable is greatly appreciated.

That little gap between the diff and axle is normal

Yea i figured that it was ok, i forgot to check it to compare before and after i think it was a total of about 4mm. if i pushed the axle in to the diff it was about 1/2mm from flush with dust shield and 3 1/2mm out. 4mm isn’t that much but i wasn’t sure what it was before so that got me over thinking about it.

New axle time! You can refurbish them OEM gold bricks before they get really bad. I've been abusing the sh1t out of $60 A1 Cardones on the trail over a year smooth as a cloud so far. Kept OEMs for trail back ups. Here it's the vid link.

When you say yours had straight in and out play, do you mean the cv axle itself would slide in and out of the dif slightly? For some reason my drivers side axle doesnt seem locked in? It slides in and out like an eighth to a quarter of an inch

346K on original axles, but installed the ECHS bushing which cleaned up a lot of the front end issues. Any little play in the front, coupled wirh poorly balanced tires, and you will get the shakes at 60.
