Spare Tire Wheel Fit?

I have used search and understand that a 285 tire will fit under the 4Runner. I am skeptical about this as my OEM spare tire is almost flush with the edge and it looks like there is no room.

I just bought a new set of BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 LT265's and have an extra one I would like to use as a spare. My question is should I mount the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 on the spare wheel/rim and place it back underneath or should I get another wheel/rim which matches my Trail wheels?

I am curious if it has to be the spare rim or will another wheel work?

Limiteds come with a matching spare. I currently have 5 Pro wheels with one as the spare. Works fine

A nice wheel could get dinged up pretty good under there.

Yeah , ran a ko2 285/70/17 on the spare rim for a few years. You get som play with where the wheel sits when the chain has some slack.

If you're in the nj area, you can try my spare on for size. Its been sitting in my garage since i switched to a bumper swing mounted spare.

Different vehicle I own has a tight fitting spare. It's deflated to zero psi when stowed. At zero psi the spare has no problem being stowed. The truck has onboard air in case of emergency. The truck is typically towing my offroad jeep that also has onboard air.

I run a 285/70-17 on a matching TRD Pro wheel that fits in the spare tire well fully inflated. The nice side faces upward. I hear from those who have KDSS that it rubs slightly against the bar, but works.
I do a five tire rotation and like to have a matching size tire and wheel.

Bit off topic but arr your rims 7” wide? Any issues running 285’s on a 7” rim?

Thank you for all of the information, this is helpful. I assume the trail wheel is lighter then the spare wheel and just better all around? I want to use this as the spare wheel:

the standard trail wheel will work. many have a fifth TRD pro, trail or standard rim as their spare rather than the steelie. limited have a full size spare as well so it will work. I have 265s on an 8" wide rim and it fits just fine and I think the trails are 7.5" wide so you should have no issues

Yes, they are 7" wide and I have never had any issues. Since I have a SL rated tire the lowest I air down to is 19psi. On my previous 2001 4Runner that I had for 17+ years, I ran a 285/75-16 on the factory 7" wheels and never had any problems.

It will fit, but the trail wheel is much heavier than a steelie. I believe it is 31 lbs each. No real benefit vs a steelie for short term use.
