Air Conditioning Clicking, what is this noise?

When I turn on the AC in my 2017 Runner, I get this clicking noise. Any thoughts? Listen below:

Thanks for the help!

Sounds to me like you have a dried leaf or other detritus between the fan and cabin air filter and it’s lightly hitting the fan blades. Remove the cabin air filter to see. While it’s out, hit the fan and blow whatever else that is in there out.

I opened the cabin air filter compartment, pulled out the filter and let it run. Still noise.

Removed Cabin Air Filter Test

It's almost like a bearing making a noise or something?

You might have to actually remove the fan and clean it that way - probably just some junk in there. Been there, done that. 3 screws hold it in place underneath the passenger side dashboard... very easy to get to and work on.

Blower motors can go bad, but I would bet you have a leaf rattling around in the fan cage. It’s an easy remove and reinstall.

I went through 3 blower motors on my 2014 and have already had one replaced on my 2021. These blower motors are total garbage and I’d bet that’s your issue. Next it will fail to work intermittently on start up, which can be remedied, for a time, by smacking the blower.

does the noise occur when you have AC and heat on or just AC? does it sounds worse at lower speeds? if it's a bearing you can sometimes hear it more at lower speeds. mine was making a bearing-type noise and I replaced the blower motor. took me 10 minutes and I'm slow, noise went away

It's the blower motor. That's the exact sound my 2015 Outback made. It just started out of the blue. Sounds like the blower motor on the 4Runner is just as easy and cheap to replace as the Outback. That's good news.

Could be the blower motor itself, I've seen a few fail before.

But I would pull it out and inspect the housing and motor. More often than not, it ends up being a twig, leaf, or some other detritus that gets lodged in the fan blades or in-between the housing and fan. See it a lot when people don't change their cabin air filter regularly and a lube guy or the customer pulls it out, stuff falls in and causes a noise.
