‘22 Pro PCS INOP

Greetings all! I wanted to see if anyone was having an issue with the pre-collision system. Have had my pro for about 2 weeks now and there has been multiple cases where I thought the PCS would kick it. I haven’t got any warnings to brake or the system not even engaging the brake. And this was with sensitivity high! I can set the system on and off and there has been a time once where it says it’s not available because it’s dirty. But other than that I don’t think the system is working at all. Could this be a OEM fox shock lift issue where it’s not tailored to the baby lift?

I wouldn't know, there's no real way to test the PCS system beyond calibrating it and checking for DTCs; Toyota kinda frowns upon driving customer's vehicles into other vehicles or walls.

But, the Owner's Manual (Pages 250-259, I tried uploading just those pages but it doesn't seem to want to upload the attachment at the moment?) does detail a lot of information regarding how the system operates and situations where it may or may not work. It's not an end all be all, but it gives a bit more context for you as an owner.

The most the dealership could do is scan the vehicle for any DTCs/issues and/or calibrate the MMWR Sensor assembly in case it may be out of calibration. I will note that if your vehicle is not stock, then basically the PCS may or may not work as designed.

Not sure if this is helpful-----but------
I have a 22 TRD PRO. With 25 miles on it I am driving thru a "rotary / round about" and some #!>*& sails thru at 50 mph.
I hit the brakes, just in time to avoid t-boning him and the pressure on the brake was increased by the system, and ABS kicked on. The dash flashed the WARNING........ there is no way I don't hit him without out the assist.
Would system have stopped the 4runner if I did not already start to apply the brake.......I am sure it would NOT have reacted quickly enough because the donkey that was sailing thru the rotary came in at a super sharp angle.
So it works......I was skeptical - but now convinced that it helps.
The 22 TRD PRO is stock

It was several months before i was in the right scenario that caused my system to flash "WARNING" at me. You've had your 4runner for 2 weeks, just enjoy it. You didn't buy a 4runner so you could find something broken within 2 weeks new...

If you really want to see if it works, the "safest" real life scenario i accidentally found is when you are behind someone that is turning right off of the road while you continue straight. You are trying to maintain your momentum, but also not get so close that you couldn't avoid hitting them if they stopped mid turn. In this scenario I usually haven't applied any brakes, just light or no throttle/coasting. I've set the system off 2 or 3 times in this same scenario in 1.5 years. YMMV and I DO NOT RECOMMEND intentionally testing your system while not only putting yourself at risk, but whomever the unlucky "victim" in front of you is.

My '21 Pro's PCS seems to be working, as I believe twice now it went off during the ownership. It has to be pretty close for it to first alert you, like very close! Don't worry too much about it, if something was wrong with it the car would alert you about it to get it checked out at the dealership. Just drive and enjoy it, and hopefully you are never in a situation where it's needed, but if so, it will be there to get you out of it safely.

When I had an Outback, it was super sensitive. Hated it. I wish I could permanently turn it off in my 4R.

I mean... if you really wanted to, there is a process for the 4Runner to permanently disable it...

It's just that you also lose the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control feature along with it. They haven't updated the TSB yet for 2022 it looks like, but it wouldn't surprise me if it gets updated soon or if the "bricking" firmware download was already updated for '22.

Problem is that it's permanent, so if you do go that route and want to reverse it at a later date, you'll need a new MMWR sensor to reactivate the features.

It’s weird that it’s telling you everything is fine (if it wasn’t, it would display a “PCS malfunction” message).

So the extent of the TSS intervention on my 2021 is it plays a tone and displays “BRAKE!” in the gauge cluster. And the distance at which it notifies you is not sufficient for you to react, anyway.

So just treat it as “as good as not being saddled with nanny features”

It doesn’t actually apply emergency braking. So amongst all this alphabet soup there is no “AEB” or automatic emergency braking. It just does this:

Thats what I had thought initially that the rig wouldn't provide assisted braking like some have mentioned as well as on some youtube videos. I guess I'll just be on more high alert seeing that this TSS isn't as advanced as one would think it would be.

This is my exact experience with me '21 ORP. I was already braking and then warning came on and the alert sounded. The system didnt add anymore brake pressure or do anything to help me out. In fact the alert and bright red warning distracted me from looking at the road, seems to be a mostly useless feature that does too little, too late.

My dad's Infiniti QX80 is personally too damn sensitive with their version of PCS... You basically get within a few car lengths of a vehicle at any speed and it starts being aggressive on the brakes; even if you're only going 15mph... Similar situation with the QX50 we were given as a loaner while his QX80 was getting some warranty work done. I was the chauffer for the day and I ended up just turning off all that crap, was too damn annoying to have it on.

I haven't had the PCS engage on a 4Runner... or any of the big boy truck/SUVs now that I come to think of it. Though I have had it kick in a couple times on test drives in Highlanders and Rav4s... usually people who can't make up their mind going into a roundabout. I will say that depending on how it's set-up they can feel a bit late on the pop-up warning; one even felt a bit late to me. But I would much rather PCS actually assist in stopping the vehicle, not overtake braking when I am actually paying attention like the Infiniti does.

I would be fine with that as long as I have regular cruise control.

I think it just disables the radar cruise part. I'll double check and post what information I find for you here.

@DallasTRDPro

I attached the TSB I mentioned earlier, it goes into detail about the process and what gets disabled; it states that "Constant Speed Cruise Control" should be retained after disabling PCS an such. Though it also seems like you'll have a permeant PCS Off Message and Indicator Light on until it's turned back on... That's a bit annoying I would have though the bricking software would make that less annoying to deal with.

I did find a "Customize Parameters" portion of the PCS section in the FSM, it seems using the TIS Techstream you can have PCS defaulted to "off" when the ignition is on, this would a less permeant solution; it may even retain the Dynanmic Cruise Control feature if you wanted to use it.

I don't really have any experience with either option as we haven't had a customer ever want to permanently disable their PCS system, nor anyone ask to have it set to default off when the ignition is cycled.

I would probably ask them if you could try the Customized setting for the PCS first and see how you like that before permanently disabling the system. Sorry for the delayed response, between being busy at work and my brain being in a bit of a "bleh" state I sorta haven't been paying attention to the forum as much as I usually do these days.

So, if you get closer, it will actually brake. It will not completely stop though, had it kick in when someone cut in front of me once.

For the cruise control, you can hold down the power button when you turn it on and it will let you use it in normal mode without the radar.
