SR5 Premium or Off-road Premium?

I’m looking to get back into a 4runner, and will primarily use it for trips up north in AZ, snow, some mountain/trails…and am trying to decide if the off-road premium is worth the extra money… i found a 2017 sr5 premium 4wd with 37k miles (TRD Pro wheels/grille) locally for $39k, and also found a 2022 off-road premium with 9k miles for $49k…is the ORP worth the $10k premium?

If i go with the 2017, i may do the fox 2.5 setup…whereas the 2022 would stay stock….

Thoughts??

I got my brand new 22 ORP with xp package for around the price of the used one you mentioned. If you go 22 just find a new one. Used cars right now are worse then new ones…price wise. Also I wanted the off road premium. Might as well skip the sr5 if goin all out on a runner imo. Trd pro excluded lol.

Like Erine said, unless you want to go way back, don't buy Used. We bought our '22 ORP for just over $48K with 4 miles on it, and it has the KDSS suspension upgrade, which to me was a main reason to get the Off Road. All the off roading gadgetry like Crawl Control, Locker, and Multi Terrain Select were just icing on the cake. Nothing like owning a new vehicle .

Appreciate the response… forgot to mention that in AZ you don’t pay tax on private party purchases…so that saves me about $5k

5K is no small amount for sure. We bought our '99 from a private party in 2004, and it now has 200K miles on it. The only thing about buying Private party is trusting the Seller's word on everything. Do they have Service Records? Are they the original owner? Been in an accident or flood? Dealer doesn't guarantee honesty as they sometimes buy vehicles at auctions, but feel there is more recourse, and often times a Carfax report. Definitely crawl under any used 4Runner to check the frame for rust, and make sure the 4WD system engages/disengages smoothly

Isn’t the KDSS prone to fail? Why pay more for something that fails?

While any system will have a chance of breaking, I have never heard it's "prone to fail". The XRAES suspension is supposedly more likely to develop problems than KDSS. KDSS has been around for years, and there is a lot of info available on it. I find it makes cornering much better than the SR5 we test drove. Can you achieve the same thing on a non-KDSS SR5 with aftermarket springs? I don't know.

I took delivery of my 22 ORP in April, $46.5k out the door. It came with TRD Black Wheel package as well...I'd buy new unless $39k is better for your budget...

With your plans to take it into the snow and off-road, an ORP might be worth it over an SR5 to get the rear lockers and additional off-road options (crawl control, MTS, etc.).

I recently traded in my 2018 ORP w/KDSS on a 2022 ORP w/o KDSS. I also recently bought the Lime Rush Pro earlier this year. There is a big difference in the handling of all three. The TRD Pro is the best all-around balance between stability and ride comfort. The ORP w/KDSS had great body control, but the ride was a bit harsh. The non-KDSS ORP rides quite nice, but there is a ton of body lean and nose dive. I've also driven a 2019 Limited of a family member, and the XREAS is probably the nicest on the road. Rides nice and great body control. But, you will eventually have to deal with servicing the XREAS system.

I can also say the LED headlights on both of my 2022 models are a huge difference compared to the halogen on the 2018. There are a lot of nice little upgrades in the newer ones too; especially in a 2022. I really like now having the LED headlights, Apple CarPlay, multi terrain monitor (360 camera), the bigger screen, much improved instrument panel, and other small upgrades my 2018 didn't have.

I would strongly recommend driving them all and deciding which you like, as they are all pretty different. Depending on how long you tend to keep vehicles, I would also consider resell value. The best resell value tends to be TRD Pro and Off-Road and then Limited and SR5. Before the supply shortages, I used to see brand new SR5 and Limited for $4-5k off MSRP, whereas TRD Pro was still about MSRP and Off-Road Premiums were maybe $2-3k off MSRP. An SR5 will definitely be worth less than an ORP in the future.

Regarding the two used ones you've found, if they are both in your budget, I think it would definitely be worth the extra $10k to get the 2022 ORP. It's not just it's an ORP vs SR5, it's also everything else you get with it being a 2022 instead of a 2017.

Definitely not "prone to fail." While some have failed, it's typically in the rust belt states where corrosion has been the source of failure. Unlike XREAS, you could go the life of the vehicle without KDSS failing.

10K difference pre tax for a 5 year newer vehicle and almost 30k less miles. go new. and you are getting an ORP. not to mention you are getting a warranty as well in that 10K incremental cost which has value
