And if you value your money and the time it takes you to earn it, stop buying parts from the stealership where the mark up things 300%+ over MSRP because "they have to keep the lights on somehow". That is a direct quote from the parts guy at my local Toyota dealer.

OEM Toyota (and any other manufacturer) parts are readily available for much less through online vendors. Plan your maintenance and place order parts with ample time to do it or when you install a filter, order another to shelf until the next maintenance cycle that way you always have them on hand.
The local dealer that I buy from has a discount parts website so I order everything through them. Their prices are on par with any of the other discount OEM parts websites. Plus I save on shipping by picking up my orders in person.

Also, it's worth asking your local dealer if they will match prices. Doesn't hurt to ask anyway. But I agree with finding a discount OEM parts dealer and ordering through them otherwise.

Should I just buy a K&N and be done with it? Or is there some other performance/replaceable filter you all recommend?

Get a Wix air filter. Cheap. Free shipping or free pickup. More pleats than OEM denso.

\K&N and K&N style cotton filters do not filter as well. They flow better because they their filtration isnt as restrictive.

Don't use K&N. They don't filter as much. Just go to Napa and get Wix (Napa Gold)

I've had K&N in all three of my 4Runners and was happy with them.

I will post here since this is the original thread ...

This was my post about this issue
So Engine Air Filters are half sized now ??

So I went to another dealer and they had the 17801-38051 filter.
This is the filter we all know - see below - high quality and has the extra cloth on the bottom. Also the paper is yellow.

Note the sticker on top of the package that says "this item replaces the 17801-YZZ13".

The parts rep told me that the 38051 is the factory p/n, and the YZZ p/n is the "optional" p/n. Whatever that means.

I also bought a WIX filter, the correct p/n is 54-9350, this one also seems of high quality, and fits perfectly.
