Any use the multiple mits/towels was technique?

So I’m gona wash my new runner for the first time. Never really knew about wash/detailing until I started looking into it. Ther is basically the 2 bucket system, ONR rinse less system and foam cannon. Also your who cares just wash it and get it over with lol. Though I came across using multiple mits/towels technique. Kind of like that it’s only one bucket. Use the mit for a few panels and get a new one. Fast and effective. Anyone do this and what you think about it? If so some details like what soap, mits you use.

Thanks

Are you referring to the technique Larry Kosilla from Ammo NYC uses? It makes sense, but I just use a normal 2 bucket method. Sometimes I even get lazy and just one bucket and make sure to "scrub" the mitt on the grit guard really well each time I get more soap. a foam cannon prewash along with a good ceramic coating seems to keep me from marring the paint. I feel like the multiple rag method would suit me. I just haven't tried it.

I typically follow whatever Ammo and Obsessed Garage does. Both are detailing gods.

Yup, I follow Matt’s rough methodology. Sure, it has pinstripes from trails, but I’m not going to intentionally mar the paint if I can help it.

I use the 2 bucket method. If its your first wash you might want to use a clay bar after especially on the windows. I don't have to use my wipers most in the rain most of the time as the water flys right off.

here is a good place to get some car detail info:

2 bucket method and a seperate bucket for wheels. Also dont scrub when you wash, only put pressure from the weight of the mit on the paint. Some clear coats are harder than others so you have more forgiveness. My finacees 2019 Murano has an extremely hard clear coat. so much that ive never had to do any paint correction on it, even when she kills me by going to drive thru car washes. My old silverado and my 4R both have medium hardness clear so i am more careful when i wash them.

I love AmmoNYC as a YouTube channel, but I’m always highly suspicious when someone comes out with their own product line.

Too often, we let good marketing convince us that products are better than they really are. Ahem, Chemical Guys. That shit is COLORED WATER.

I wouldn’t blame Larry if Ammo’s brand was, I am sure there are “labs” that make people with great ideas feel like they’re really inventing something or collaborating with a company.

Can anyone vouch for their products, or their efficacy vs some other products you’ve tried? Those of us who have seen enough detailing videos know about wheel cleaners that turn red in the presence of iron. Chemical Guys wheel cleaner STARTS OUT red. I can only imagine this is because “red” is what they determined customers want to see. Same goes for feeding chickens a special diet to make egg yolks appear more orange vs yellow.

Haha. Yeah, Chemical Guys stuff isn't great. As far as the Ammo stuff, Chicago Auto Pros on youtube (another great resource for detailing tips and product reviews) did/is doing a long term test on coatings. Gyeon and Ammo did really well. They were kind of surprised about the Ammo coating (as was I).

ive watched a few ammo videos and just couldn't. They clearly know what they're doing but when I see someone wash a car with black latex gloves on, I'm out. I don't know why everyone thinks they need black latex gloves for everything anymore.

I've been using Adams Polishes for 7-8 years. They have some products that suck and their new compounds and polishes aren't great but they have some really good stuff overall. They do tend to listen to customers and phase out products that get bad feedback.

I just started using a foam cannon and I do the following.

Pressure washer, foam cannon, mitt wipe down, pressure washer, foam cannon, rinse , blower & towel, detail spray or ceramic coating spray.

I recently did a clay bar on the 4runner and audi and it was needed. I've had both cars for the past 5 years. The audi was very rough in areas. The clay bar made it very smooth and glass like.

F_ck a mitt 😂 I don't care anymore due to years of foresting. When I did care the only thing I touch the paint with is to dry it with one of those absorber sham wow shammies. No swirling and quickly dried spot free same time.

I always wore gloves way back in the day when I washed/detailed cars for a living. Having your hands constantly soaked in water and cleaning products made my hands nasty and pruny at the end of the day.

I’ll call out another “premium” brand that got too big for their britches: Griot’s. Again - a watery mess that doesn’t “coat” anything, really. Their website insists they’ve been around since 1990, but their products have only relatively recently appeared on the shelves of my local Auto Zone.

I’ve noticed a lot of products changing formulations entirely without advertising that it’s a different product. Armor All is one. The smell of the original made it seem like it could strip paint, and would be highly toxic to consume. Almost like, something that actually worked! It’s greasy sheen would last for months on a car dash, a little less so in higher touch areas.

Now, it smells like raw pumpkin guts, a light, inoffensive, gourd-y, organic scent. And ironically does a great job CLEANING leather, but does not make it shine. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Want another one? RAIN-X.

Another? Eagle One products (Wax As U Dry, etc)

It’s like they all struck deals with Kevin O’Leary on Shark Tank and part of the conditions are that they must get the price of their product down to $1.00 a bottle or he takes control of all operations Any use the multiple mits/towels was technique?

The point where Larry loses me is the one where he’s filling this big gouge in someone’s black G-Wagon.

Not only does he highly underestimate what can be done about the scratch, he does a royal whackjob filling the scratch.

Larry can DETAIL. He cannot PDR / touch up / blend.
