Gear Selector Ignition Interrupt switch

I don't know what the actual technical term for this is, but there's evidently a switch/sensor of some sort in the gear selection mechanism that prevents the truck from starting if it doesn't "see" that it's in Park.

Mine's been acting up.

Sometimes the truck starts first try, no problem. Other times there's zero ignition and I have to press the brake pedal, jiggle the gear selector right to left, and it starts. Occasionally I even run it down to Reverse or Neutral, back into Park before it fires up.

Before I start pulling the center console apart:

Has anyone else had this happen?

I'm guessing it could be as simple as an electrical contact that needs cleaning... but could it also be a whole sensor that's failing?

In either case, is there's a walk-through for disassembling the center console? I hate experimenting with interior clips... they're not always easy to find until they snap.

Gear Selector Ignition Interrupt switch

I have not been prevented from starting or shifting, but there’s some kind of latent “click” / release that only seems to occur once I’m in drive and have begun to drive off. (Typically first 100-200 feet of wheels rolling)

What is this? 2021 Nightshade.

neutral safety switch 84540-35060.( check the part against the vin). But truck should still start with the truck in park. No ignition could be an electrical issue. Battery contacts good and clean is a good start.

Starter contact corroded could also be an issue.

Neutral safety switch on the passenger side of the transmission is likely the culprit. It gets corroded from Winter salt etc. This makes the selector hard to shift. There are a few threads on this; as it's a common problem due to the switch not being sealed. A few members here have changed their own - doesn't appear to be all that difficult, but may be complicated depending on how badly corroded it is.

This is a single click that sounds like it’s coming from under the steering column.

There’s still a chance it could be a loud relay for locks, but I’m not hearing the locks themselves actuate in the same way as if I pressed the button.

One other thing came to mind. I was pulling out of a gas station one day that had a speed bump. I approached very slowly and actually came to a stop before proceeding over it.

When I tried to proceed over it, this same relay/switch actually got hung up and began a rapid clicking, which did not stop until I shifted out of drive and back in.

I had that done last winter... Canadian winters are not vehicle friendly. Shifting got worse the colder it got.

This starter interruption is a different thing.
