High mount brake light
Has anyone found a good quality aftermarket high mount brake light? I've been looking for a smoke or tinted one purely for aesthetics. All the ones I'm seeing on Amazon or eBay seem to be hit or miss with a lot of fitment issues. I haven't found any elsewhere.

I would just throw some smoked film on it and call it a day. or if you don't want to, go to a local vinyl wrap shop. they can put some smoked film on for cheap. then you have no fitment or water intrusion fears, and if you end up not liking it, you peel it off.

I tried a red one I found on Ebay. But eventually reverted back to stock because of water/condensation getting into it. I don't think it's as sealed as OEM.

This is option #2. I have a whole roll of tinted vinyl wrap and have been tossing between it and replacing the whole fixture.

That's just one of my concerns as well. I'm up on the wet side of WA and condensation is all too common.

Honestly it's a fairly small piece compared to say the headlights or tail light. Just wrap it and see how you like it, it's a bit of a pain to replace those 3rd brake lights anyways.

A pain how? 2 screws out in the open, easy to get to, perfect height. Do they leak after being reinstalled? I saw there's a foam gasket on them. Does it even matter if it leak since it's on the spoiler or whatever it's called?
I imagine they're easier to replace than the license plate lights. Can't have the gate all the way up, and at 6'2", stooping is a pain. Those were a hassle to change out.

Apparently they finally wised up, I recall doing a couple spoiler mounted LED stop lamps on a few different models, they ran the wiring through the spoiler, was a pain. But you're right it's just two screws and you should be able to replace it easy

A light coat of black spray paint or even plastidip on the inside of the cover will do the trick...
I did this on my Jeep years ago then reversed it when I realized "why am I making my brake lights less useful?"

That does sound like a pain. Why they wouldn't put a plug at the light and have a small harness extension is beyond me. Don't know if the 4R comes without the spoiler these days but at least the light doesn't have a pigtail like you describe. I believe this light assembly is used on a few different models.

There's tint spray paint available for this type of application. One such product is called Nite-shades made by VHT. A very nice finished product can be had but there is a lot of work involved and I'm just not that interested in doing it. I don't have an issue tinting the high mount light when the other 2 brake lights are more noticeable anyway.
Why on earth would you use black paint or plastidip? My mind is totally blown.
I applied some tint film today. Didn't want to waste $40+ on a cheap C.P.O.S. off of Amazon or eBay since none of them review particularly well.

Because it works...
Especially plastidip which is totally removable. I did this on the inside of the cover, but there's like a thousand videos of people doing it on the outside of their brake lights...

I'm actually pretty surprised that there aren't more quality options for exterior OEM lighting component upgrades other than fog lights given the longevity and popularity of the 5th gen.
