Hi all, my question is about mounting two rear recovery points using existing holes in the rear crossmember.

I currently have a stock rear bumper with a hitch receiver recovery point. It’s done it’s job well, but i drag my ass over large rocks and I keep getting hung up on the receiver recovery point (as well as the receiver itself sometimes). It’s beat to crap at this point and the receiver itself has tons of surface rust (which isn’t good for a 2 year old truck). I’m considering removing the hitch receiver completely but I need rear recovery points. Not interested in plate rear bumpers at this time because it appears that they all stick out just as much if not more than the stock bumper, unless you cut off the rear cross member.

All the plate bumpers mount to existing holes on the rear cross member, so I was thinking I could cut holes in the plastic bumper cover and mount two recovery points using existing holes. Could be as simple as threading a soft shackle but I’d prefer something more permanent. Has anyone done this? Looking for ideas.

Not sure if this would work for you, but Hefty Fabworks makes a high clearance hitch receiver. You would likely have to cut up your bumper some for the higher hitch. Does stick out some more in the back due to it being more level with the crossmember and not below it. Not sure if this is a better solution, but throwing it out there.

The rear hatch window rolls down for a reason. Simply roll it down, run the rope through the passenger area and loop around the shifter.

It's extreme and time consuming, but you could also remove the rear bumper cover completely when/before off-roading (there's a member on the forum that keeps their rear bumper cover off all the time). That way you could remove the receiver and use whatever holes in the rear crossmember as you wish, without permanently modifying your rear BC.

At a minimum, you could do this to test out the efficiency of the crossmember locations you want to use.

I’m sorry I should have mentioned it’s listed as an accessory for there rear 5th gen bumpers. Maybe worth inquiring if they would sell only the hitch receiver? It is its own part, not part of the bumper.

Is your spare under there too? I drag as$ on that hitch recovery point too �� but most of the time my spare drags first acting kind of like a skid plate. It hangs a little lower than those recovery points with a 33. So I just drive through it. I don't have rust problems here but if it gets to be in need of a little love I would just resurface the steel and use a good paint on it too keep it in good shape. Mine after over ten years of abuse. Original coating still good.. Notice the mud on the tip of my spare. It seems to be in the perfect spot to keep me from hitting that hitch in most cases.

Those yellow recovery points seem a little weak with just two bolts. Also, they appear to be next to an intact exhaust. My exhaust is bent into a raising, so those recovery points will likely get hit too. I’m thinking of something I can mount directly behind the rear cross member like the Ironman bumper pic below.

Jake, y’all got mud, but we have rocks. The spare can definitely catch on them but it’s not been nearly as bad as the receiver. The loops are all bent and the recovery point that sticks out another 5 inches just hits everything

If you are dragging the rear, you need a lift. Nowhere do you mention having a lift. I have the Rough Country leveling kit (1” rear) and I don’t drag even on the worst off-road trails in western Colorado. (Think Mineral Creek south of Ouray).

Oh we have rocks! Natural stone galore. I just don't hit pointed ones I know will catch 🤠. Your idea of mounting them on the rear cross member is good. That guy has a custom bumper in the picture. You could mount one on the factory rear cross member on each side of the hitch in my picture in the same method as the factory front recovery points. Drill through cross member and weld in recovery loops on front and backside.
