For some it's a structural thing. I can't remember what thread I saw it in but the BM will supposedly help to keep the fire wall and floor pan from getting crushed in a head on collision.

The DRT relocation kit claims to be the strongest, and certainly looks good for those that care about aesthetics. It is the most expensive I believe.

I have no experience with it, but there is a fab guy Timbo's Customs in Florida who is on Tacoma World, and has installed several of them. Maybe he can shed some light on the quality and install.

It's to keep the front wheel from intruding into the cab in the small frontal overlap crash test. I figure my plate bumper will turn the 4runner sideways and into a nice high speed rollover in that scenario

I've been making a horrible attempt at some fab work on my 4th gen LT project. Major trial and error.

So I can attest, my welding and fab skills pretty much fall into said category. Luckily my 23 yr old neighbor has a tig cert and works out at the space center.

Needless to say he saved my ass when he took over mig duties on my Runner. I tack it, he glues it.

After all the front end work has settled in, there is still some slight rubbing on the right side.
Both sides were rubbing the "body mount bump" on the mud flaps. Removed those and the left side clears.
Time to get the angle grinder to remove and smooth the shiny spot.

No, they are not created equal. I haven’t encountered any that are the same thickness as the Toyota frame - usually the plates are too thick, which makes it a PITA to weld on, as you need higher temp to weld thicker steel.
