It is not too bad of a job, I recently removed the rack to move some mounts around. I used ratchet straps to the front and rear to pull it up.
I did like you plan to and left the six base brackets on and the whole operation took less than 20 minutes to remove, another 20 or so to re install. Once you have those base brackets lined up and mounted subsequent removal/installation of the rack is pretty easy.
