You are correct that they bolt to the frame and I could see them protecting the expensive-to-repair lower sills of the body if you lay it onto a rock. I don't think you'd want to be dragging / dropping the weight of your truck onto them repeatedly, but I kind of see it as a "sacrificial" crush point between a rock and the lower sills.
A little lighter than most aftermarket options, so that may factor into things for you.
All of that being said, I'm replacing mine with the RSG angled sliders with bump out. The other two people that ride with me need a step, I also spend enough time on trails where the actual rear bump out has proven helpful on my last 4Runner and GX.

Thanks for the honest feedback! To be completely honest, we had our Tacoma for 2 years and Medano Pass was the most "terrain" the vehicle saw outside of sand hills outside town. While I have aspirations for a full trail rig, being honest with myself means admitting I likely don't need $1,000+ sliders. Basically I need an something that can prevent the rocker panel from caving if something goes unexpectedly wrong. I'm leaning toward OEM for that if I'm honest. Thanks again!
