New Rear Bumper from Demello Offroad

2010-2021 4RUNNER REAR BUMPER 5th GEN - Demello Offroad

Looks like a great bumper: It has a great design and meets all my requirements.

The only fault I see is when shutting the rear swing arm the tire carrier has quite a bit of shake in it. Should that be a concern? Vid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yElf7Rpl2hY

Thoughts?

It's hard to tell honestly. He slammed that fairly hard. Do the latching points lock the swing arms rigidly to the bumper and each other? If not it'll probably be kind of wobbly at speed and especially if you're unloaded and have stiff rear suspension. Be worse if you have an unbalanced tire or one out of round.

On a separate and purely personal preference note, After having dual swing outs for a couple years I decided a single swing out (passenger side) would be preferable for a few reasons. First, one long mounting area gives you much more flexibility to configure your storage space on the arm. (As a for instance a hi lift could be mounted horizontally behind the spare tire if it were one arm.) Also, a fold down table mounted to a dual swing arm set up is pretty short and to a single much longer. Second, I have my awning mounted drivers side and I find the arm is inconveniently in the way when moving back and forth from the back of the rig to the side under the awning

The Expedition One bumper looks to be a similar design. Anyone notice wobble on that one?

Is there a weight for this bumper?

thats exactly why i went with shrockworks single...KISS principle, overbuilt, less welds, no wobble, and less moving parts.

Bad thing about a single is if you plan on using it in dense mall parking lots (costco)...you can't or when you tow.

The only bad thing about shrockworks, is lack of modularity.....compared to the new kids on the block.

I like demello stuff, hence why i have their front bumper, but there is a lot of good bumper makers out there.

Yeah Shrockworks makes good stuff. I saw in person one of their front bumpers a couple years ago and it was a beast.

As far as daily driving and towing go obviously no bumper at all would be most convenient. Honestly, my rig is just way to built to be a good daily anymore. It's not the tires or suspension necessarily but storage. All the decisions I've made revolve around camping and getting there. (Overlanding I suppose)

I recently was lucky enough to move away from daily-ing my rig which is great in many ways and will make maintenance and vehicle longevity much easier.

I'd really love to do another build but everything's so damn expensive right now I'll probably wait till demand cools off. I've been thinking of either importing a new 75 series LC or taking the bed off a Tundra and custom building a tray for it.

And as far as demand goes I think some folks are going to be realizing they don't want their super built mall crawlers sometime soon.

I've been saving my pennies for a rear bumper.

So far it's this Demello Offroad bumper or a single swing out Nguyen Works rear bumper. The Demello is feature packed and the Nguyen is lighter design.

Thanks for taking the time to voice your thoughts; reading what others have to say about their experience gives me a good reality check.

I daily this runner so I don't really want to overload it like crazy.

There's at minimum a 35 on there, probably a 37 or even 40 (I don't actually know what he's running on that rig, but it's not a 33). That amount of weight, you're going to be hard pressed to not have oscillate at all when the swing out is slammed that hard.

Jason makes great stuff. I had his sliders on my 4th gen, and tons of people have run his stuff in extreme conditions for years and years. Based on that, and his reputation, I'm going to say it's built well enough to stand up to whatever someone can dish out. If not, he'll stand by it.

I think it's a 35" tire (I read 315/70/17 on the tire).

I didn't think about the tire size. I run 285/70/17's so mine will be significantly lighter.

I know Demello has a great track record. I'm just opening up a conversation and seeing what the hive says. This bumper is about $2000 over the Nguyen bumper so I'm trying to weigh the pros/cons.

Thanks for your thoughts.

$2000 buys a lot of gas to go places. I've started to think about things in terms of what experiences will you get for your dollar these days. The arguments above for a single swing out vs two may be the real issue to decide, then see what's out there for your needs.
