Dual smart usb to replace cla - pt976-03201
I recently discovered that Toyota makes a fantastic part to add new technology to the future classic OG Trail Edition, being the OEM dual smart USB to replace the 12V cigar lighter adapter. Most importantly, I was able to confirm it is plug and play for the 2012 Toyota 4Runner which most likely indicates it will work on all years of the 5th Generation Toyota 4Runner. The most difficult decision was deciding if it should replace the front console, inside the glove box, or the rear cargo hatch.

That part number requires tapping into factory wires that is referenced in that link while this part number is 100% plug and play directly into the factory harness for the 12v adapter.

Sorry no instructions yet. I merely tested that the harness would be plug and play last night in my 12 T4R by access the rear hatch cigar lighter plug.
This weekend, I will get the tool to remove the Cigar Lighter Adapter and look into adding this to the glovebox CLA or under the dash. I have added a picture to include the harness on this particular part.

If this is used in the dash to replace the single USB, what happens with Carplay if you connect 2 apples devices? (2 iphones, iphone and ipad, etc)

This replaces the 12v cigarette lighter adapter and not the single USB in newer 4Runners. In my 4Runner my USB linked to the radio system is in the glove compartment and I have an old school "line in" beside my 12v power supply.

No special tool needed. Just a small screw driver.

Personally I wouldn't bother doing this. There are plenty of very low profile 12V to dual USB adapters available that do a nice job. There's always the possibility you might want the 12V socket for example a GRMS radio that needs 12V.
