Morimoto Headlight & 4 Banger Fog Light Install **ISSUES**

Hey gang,

Hoping I could get a little help!

I have a 2022 TRD Offroad premium and over the weekend I attempted to install Morimoto XB LED headlights and Morimoto 4Banger Fog lights. A lot of issues came up that I wanted to post on here to share and hopefully get some help.

So here's what I did:
-Fog lights disconnected
-Took off front bumper
-Removed factory headlights
-Began install of Morimoto headlights ... was cruising along and here's where it got interesting...
3 of the 4 cable harnesses all matched and clicked in. The 4th one, which appears to be the high beam cable harness, did not match and fit. I didn't run the Morimoto DRL cable into the fuse box at this time. Was confused why it didn't fit so I turned car on and turned lights on to see what worked/didn't work. Obviously no DRL (no DRL cable ran into fuse box), no high/low beam, only the fog tail lights. Turned car off.

At this point I decided to just reinstall my factory headlights and move onto the install on fog lights.

-Reinstalled factory headlights
-Removed factory fog lights from bumper
-Installed Morimoto 4 Banger fog lights with fog light housing onto front bumper
-Reinstalled bumper half way and tested everything

Turned car on and Fog lights don't work and DRL's dont work on factory headlights. High/low beams all work ok. My mind starts thinking I may have blown a fuse since I never hooked up the Morimoto DRL cables to fuse box. I wrap up the day and complete the reinstall of front bumper and decided to trouble shoot what the issues are.

At this point I'm pretty lost as to what's going on here. Did some research online and it looks like there's issues with the Morimoto XB headlights and newer 4runner models. I think I need a housing adapter for the high beam cable harness. But I'm confused whats up with the no DRL's on factory head lights and my new 4 banger Fog lights aren't working either. I double checked all connections on the new fog lights and everything looks correct.

Help! If anyone has any ideas what I should do I'm all ears. Thanks for reading and thanks in advance.

I hope you find out what the issue was. I'd like to chime in as well and say that on my z06 I had a full morimoto setup, and one thing that will likely keep me from buying them again is that when you would hit the brakes, if you let off and hit them again within 1 second the lights would completely shut off, then back on again. Super dangerous at night. Made a thread on the forums and a lot of other users also confirmed and then one of the moromoto guys said 'it's normal, nothing we can do'. Yeah, what a crock of shit. Lights turning off completely at night is not normal nor safe.

Not to be ass but I'd suggest returning the lights. the 2021 and 2022 LED OEM headlights are amazing. They are some of the best headlights Ive had in a vehicle and Ive had a set of retrofitted TL projectors in an old car. FYI if your not familiar TL projectors have long been considered the holy grail of projector lights.

Ive seen people post up nothing but issues with morimoto headlights. Either they have issues immediately or within a year. They are really just overpriced and relabeled chinese headlights. Go to alibaba and find the same light for half the price or less, order it and compare it to morimoto, no difference.

You're all good. I appreciate the opinion and input.
Yes I've read around and seen issues with Morimoto but like them for a few reasons: 1) the look 2) the DRL's 3) overall light output is strong
I've read really strong reviews of them and seen them in person. If I cannot get these running I'll definitely consider returning.

I suppose a logical thing would be to check the all the connection harnesses to the fog lights and make sure they are connected correctly. If no success then swap back to factory to see if I can get those running again.

For sure they look really cool. If your set on keeping them then have them exchanged. Especially if a connector is wrong or missing. The issues Ive seen with them is the only thing thats kept me from buying them.

I went through two pairs over a year. First the DRL corner went out. Then I got GEN II for my replacement. One of the projector went out and started to flicker. At that point I lost confidence on them. I took them out and I got the OEM 2022 LED headlights. Very happy with them.

Happy to share that I got everything setup and working properly. Fog light issue was something simple... The polarity on the adapter harness was flipped and backwards. Flipped them around 180 degrees and re clicked them in and bam then work! My dumb luck is I hooked both of them up wrong.

Morimoto designed their adapter harnesses for the 4bangers so that if you install them either way you'll receive an audible click when attaching and it will fit. You'd think that they would make them so there's only one way to click them in so that people like me don't have to go troubleshooting

As for the headlights... All I needed was the morimoto wire harness adapter that is for TRD pro and limited models. Turns out from what I'm reading that all 2021+ models will require this harness. Hopefully this helps someone else out with the same issues.

I certainly hope that doesn't happen with mine. I have the Gen II's.. and yes there have been stories that the Gen 1's had major issues. Did morimoto not offer any replacements under any warranty?

Thanks!

Installed the same lights on my 2016. Had the same 4banger issue. A quick read through this thread helped a lot!
