Most people bend them by accidently hittng a ledge or a boulder or a big ass hole, going moderately fast in the desert.
So basically speed + immovable object = bent spindle

haha! You're probably right. I can imagine a spindle would be pretty unhappy in that case.

Well, I’m satisfied with this data. I don’t think spindle gussets are in our near future unless we decide to go with wheels at the same time as our 34’s.
In that case, i think it’ll be, as someone else put it, for insurance purposes as the expense of the parts/labor and aftermarket wheels doesnt seem warranted unless:
1. You’re go-fasting much of the time or building a long-travel rig.
2. Running 37-40’s and running hard-core trails with big drops or big leverage.

Toyota raced the Baja 1000 on OEM spindles including a roll over mid race. They weren't babying it. And they used the spindle hole for the non KDSS sway bar as the mount for the limit chain. Spindles seemed to hold up okay for that vehicle. I think you'll probably be okay if you don't push harder than racing in the Baja 1000. 😀

limit strap from the spindle to the frame? i wanna see that. seems overly complicated instead of the LCA to the frame lol, but sounds about right for a manufacturer.

Be interesting to see a video discussion of the Baja 4Runner, what they did and didn't do for prep and a before and after discussion as well.

Yep. But not a strap. A chain. I bet it rattled like hell. But it's functional - super easy to adjust in the field, durable, and rotates freely with the spindle. It's unusual though.
Also note: original bump stops!
I think that 4runner is still in use as a test mule at TAPG. So it might actually still be relevant to the 6th gen development.

that shock tower hoop is suspicious as hell lol. all that work to run a 10"???stroke shock and stock width control arms. silly toyota.

When I said moderate speed, I mean forest road speed and a chance encounter with a boulder or small waterfall ledge or big hole will destroy a spindle.
So more likely to destroy spindle in desert activities vs forest or rock crawling activities.
So u can go desert mobbing or rock crawling and nothing happen but u hit a boulder at 15 mph n bend a spindle. It’s those oh shit moments that get us

Google "Baja 4Runner youtube" and several videos appear about Toyota Baja 4Runner and yes, they specifically point out that the spindles are stock, as is rest of front suspension.

To run in stock class there's a lot of limits on suspension mods. Basically you must use all OEM suspension and drive train other than springs and shocks. So there wasn't a choice in using longer arms. They have to be OEM parts.
I don't think there's any reason to have double shear UCA mounts with OEM rubber bushings. The rubber bushings provide a lot of cushioning. That's why IMO they really are better than poly or rigid bushings for most uses.
It performed pretty well for what it is. Had a decent lead in the class until the rollover. Then they lost the front drive. I think due to an ECU issue related to rolling, but I've yet to read anything definitive on what the issue was. I don't think it was physical damage. But still ended second in class. It actually did better than any of the half dozen Ford raptor runs. But that's not really unusual. A stock taco also beat the raptor head to head in the same mint 400 a few years ago.
Some of the fab work looks questionable to me. But I don't know what the build schedule was. Might have done it in two weeks? There's a lot more out there to read about the raptor builds. They are really invasive - usually they cut the cab in half on those and build the cage and then rebuild the cab and repaint to look OEM. On this one I think they just built what they could without major chopping. Probably on a much smaller budget.
What we need is more oems racing. I'd love to see a stock class with a TRX, raptor, Tundra, and stock mini full of Tacoma, rangers, Colorado, 4Rs, wranglers, and broncos. All running the same year head to head in stock classes.
