Hi all, I had my back quarter panel window broken out in a smash and grab in San Jose, yea I know!
I had the window replaced and the company did a botched job and had to re- set the window. In doing so they scratched the hell out of the inside gutter where the window sits in but it’s the finished part of the vehicle where the rolled edge wraps into the window. They tried covering up the gouge marks using black primer hoping I wouldn’t notice (4runner is black too) and long story short they are paying for an auto body place to fix it the right way.
Really two options
1) auto body place can pull window sand down repair and paint the inside gutter area masking the area so they don’t have to paint the entire quarter panel down to the bumper. They are pretty confident they can polish the mask edge to be smooth. My concern here is that the primer covering up the damage extends beyond the rolled edge in some spots
2) pull the window, remove gobi rack, remove rear bumper and wheel well trim, paint entire panel up to the vertical support beam to the windshield.
My concern here is that there’s more work and probably more prone to a paint mismatch , as well as painting over factory finish which could lead to problems down the road.
What would you do and have you had any minor damage that you were worried about a masking seam line showing or paint mismatch?
See pics, the damage pretty much goes around the entire window throughout with primer slopped out all over the place
