Les Schwab Open Range 265/70/17 - 1700 mile winter review

Got new shoes before the trip to and from Seattle to Jackson Hole. The French Q-Tip store set me up with the Open Ranges. Verdict: 2 thumbs up. Quiet while cruising at 80 through Montana, and like glue in the cold dry snow. Good in wet sloppy slush as well. Very sketchy conditions over Teton Pass, and up to the National Park but no probs. The tiptronic shifting going downhills worked wonderful. Averaged 17 mpg in 2h and 15 in 4h. Just my US$.02!!! Inbound skiers: JHMR is managing COVID very well. Lines very manageable and lots of wind deposit powder in all the north facing aspects. Backcountry skiers: 25 Short was AMAZING!!! So much fun, and face shots for hours.

Those tires seem to be a local or regional brand?

They are made by Sumitomo, and marketed here out west Under Les Schwab.

Glad to hear they are working well. I've seen them a lot on half ton and mid sized trucks and such in the Seattle area. It's just a shame the sidewall lettering looks straight out of the 70s.

Les Schwab used to have good tires (Toyo) and prices. Now their 'top of the line' model is made by Sumitomo. An okay tire, but definitely not top tier.

You can get an actual Sumitomo Encounter A/T for just about $100.00 less per tire in the same size and load range, than the Open Range branded tires from Les Schwab.

Ended up getting a set in stock size. On the way to the store I used a decibel meter on a section of roads while coasting in neutral. After the new tires I ran the same test. Ended up being 1db quieter using the 10 ply tire. Tracks straight and No balance issues noted.

60 days to evaluate ‘‘em but it looks good right now.
