Regular Or Premium Gas In Your 4runner for mpg?
Is it worth putting premium gas in to get better mileage?

The MPG difference, if any, won't offset the more expensive price of premium fuel.

This. If you’re averaging 18 MPG, you would need to increase that to 25 MPG or better to make up for the price difference. That’s not going to happen in a 4Runner.

I've run 93 for 5 years and don't feel there's much of a difference in MPG, with that said I got my ECU tuned for 93 a few weeks back for extra HP and it does help with that

There is no noticeable difference other than you having less $ after filling up.

Glad you’re asking questions before you buy. Again most of us feel you’re better off in a Highlander. In fact, most of us would have been better off in a Highlander.

But here we are thinking we made a solid macho man choice years ago when it’s mostly women who drive 4Runners.

No Ragrats!

I just drove my 2022 TRD Pro across the State of Iowa with regular gas which has 10% ethanol and got 20.4 MPG and drove 65-70 mph as I did not have 1000 miles on it at the start of the day.
So I will stick with regular gas.

Has anyone run E15 88 octane in your 4Runner? I saw a gas station in Mississippi that had it and my gas cap said I shouldn't run E20-E85 so I'm assuming we could run it.

I wouldn't bother. It's cheaper but you would end up using more.

I use Regular unleaded 10% ethanol just running around town. Usually about 15.5-16 mpg.
However when towing the camper I use super unleaded (93 octane) OR real "no ethanol" fuel (91 octane) Better mileage, no, but especially with the no ethanol fuel the engine just seems to run smoother and quieter than with the ethanol stuff.
Even my little bride noticed, and she is not known for noticing stuff like that.

Nothing about the design characteristics of this engine would benefit from higher octane fuel ( lower flash point ) other than reducing the possibility of pre-ignition / detonation which could certainly occur under high stress and heat, no debate there, if those are the conditions which you’re operating in then go for it.

Otherwise the base tune of the engine control management, fuel injection method etc is best supplied with high flash point ( regular ) fuel. And at these prices nowadays - thank heaven, or Toyota.

Most of my Mercedes and BMW buddies are using mid grade and driving slower LoL.
