Shop installed wrong tires

I ordered 265 70 r17 tires. Went to pick up and thought they looked a little big. Checked when I got home and sure enough they installed 285s. Double checked paperwork and I ordered and paid for 265s. Not sure what to do. They look great, but I have some rubbing at full turn. I'd love to keep them, but not sure I want to go down the road of modding to make them work. sigh.

Well..... that's an interesting problem to have. Are they P-metric of LT tires? Judging by the picture, they might be p-metric, which wouldn't take a bunch of mods to make fit, just a little fender liner trimming and heating/shaping.

I suppose it really depends on what you intend to do with your 4Runner. The larger tires would have a slight negative impact on fuel economy.

If it were me, and my intention was to keep it near stock, i'd likely bring it back to the tire shop and have them put on the tires I ordered. If you have any intention of adding a small level, lift or anything, then I'd keep em.

You may need to trim the bottom edge of the front fender, push the liner forward, and remove the mud-flaps. If it still rubs you may need to hammer the bottom 6-8 inches of the pinch weld. Plenty of videos available.

I run 285s on a modified rig. If you want to keep yours fully stock, avoid all rubbing, and aren't looking for off-road clearance, you should consider going back to the 265s.

Another thing to consider is your TRD Pro wheels - those are 7" wide, and 285s normally require 7.5" - 9".

Great point. Even if I can resolve the rubbing there's still going to be other issues.

Maxp0wer, I've 285/70/17 with no lift or any other clearance mods. While slight rub at full lock when backing up is present it is a non issue. You got free upgrade for which most of us paid. Keep them and keep on rocking!

I'll at least remove the mud flaps and see if that helps. Hard to test full turn + full travel.

Also, they are LT 285s and almost $100 more per tire than what I ordered.

285s are fine on the Semas. Lots of people including myself run them.

Also, it's a question of ethics as to whether or not you need to let the shop know that they goofed and gave you more than you paid for. My moral compass would lead me to feel like i was stealing from them, but that's just me.

We ran 265's for a year with no issues, it's a good size, but I'd want a lift with 285's otherwise you're probably gonna be rubbing all over the place.

Well yea, but if he takes them back the shop loses even more $. Tires usually drop in value by more than half just being mounted and driven. I paid $300 for a set of brand new Goodyear 10 ply take-offs from a shop for my van. Him keeping them is a win-win, no moral question about it in my book.

I have mixed feelings on it as well. It's probably a wash for them by the time they remove these and mount/balance another set and then they have the dilemma of selling these as new. And I have to waste more of my time trying to get it sorted out. I don't feel like it's stealing since there was no deception on my part, and I'm actually pretty pissed about it. They screwed up and someone there should have caught it. But maybe I should let them know and see where the chips fall.
