Any Catastrophic Mechanical Failures in High Mileage Trucks?

Stupid question of the day.

My ‘16 is about to pass 70k miles next week or so. I pass extended warranty at 75k. On my previous two 4Runners I traded or sold them at 66k / 56k miles respectively.

I follow this board and all 4Runner groups religiously and honestly I’ve never really heard of a catostrophic mechanical failure (engine transmission) in a 5th Gen. I’m in multiple car groups on FB as I try to increase exposure on a side project and it’s amazing how many people in brand new vehicles (Colorado’s and Duramax) have nearly vehicle life ending failures of engines and transmissions. Of course The occurance is rare and not indicative of the Model as a whole but I honestly can’t remember ANY similar events with the 4Runner.

As I approach my normal tolerance limit for daily commuter I’m tempted for once in my life to show restraint and see how long this truck can go. Should I pop for another extended warranty and buy something out to 150,000 miles? Anyone here sell those?

You're not even broken in yet. If you don't get 300K out of it before performing a large repair, you're doing something wrong. At the rate you put mileage on, I think it's safe to say you travel the highway a lot. If that's a true assumption, I bet you get 500K out of it.

I’m down to 70mi a day ... for awhile there I was doing 120 to 140 plus frequent trips back and forth to Texas. I’d say highway miles are easy but my stretch of the highway to work is pure mortal combat with speeds up to 90mph to keep up with left lane traffic at altitudes of 7300ft.

I’d like to keep this truck and make it the kiddos driver in 8yrs but that’s a long time.

Might be a fluke, but I shit out a rear main seal at 30k, covered under warranty. I haven't heard of anyone else on here really having that issue before, although the dealer tech said it happens frequently enough. If warranty hadn't covered it, that would be an expensive fix.

Didn't @Intruder have a rear main seal problem? I don't remember and he hasn't been around in a while.

And maybe call me weird but is a rear main seal a catastrophic failure? Sure there’s some labor to repair but it’s not a rebuild. At least IMHO

Any Catastrophic Mechanical Failures in High Mileage Trucks?

94,000 absolutely flawless miles here. I just replaced the ORIGINAL rotors not too long ago. That’s unheard of.

First 4Runner I ever drove and the one that made me want one had 115,000 miles. It drove literally like new. I was immediately hooked.

At 94,000 miles my runner is running stronger than my Jeep was at 52,000. These things are well known to run past 250,000+ miles. I plan on keeping mine until it dies, which at 10,000 miles a year, is forever. Best purchase ever. Keep it.

Ive been thinking about brakes too. Think I have a long time to go before I change them though. Possibly after you.

I'm at 140k. Still feels like new- steering is tight, brakes work perfectly, engine still sounds like a diesel...

I like to think the VVTi styled technology makes it sound like a supercharger sometimes.

I have 222 miles on my '18 ORP with no issues so far. I hope to get 222,000 with no major issues.

I just got a leaking transfer case at 76k. Not crippling, but rather annoying.
