with American's constant request for more speed (usually in the form of more displacement) i wonder if they decided to keep the 6th ratio locked away because the 5th gen would bog/hunt even more than it already does and get an even worse reputation for adequate power. that's the only other theory i can think of besides yours.

There was a press release around 2005 ish about the a760 and it said something like "we were able to use the same gear train as the 5 speed and make our new 6 speed with the same transmission." As though it was some new discovery. It was a 6 speed from day 1. Just silly marketing.

This is the way. With 4.56 diffs (already produced btw - the 2010 4cyl had 4.56 ratio), and the 6 speed overdrive the final drive net ratio is effectively identical to the current 5th gear and 3.73. and you'd get all the benefits of the nice low 1st gear both in normal traffic and off road. It would be a very nice solution if it were reasonably doable. But I don't think it is.
