It's not just a color change. There are numerous upgrades from 2019:

New wheel design
LED headlights
Auto high beams
Surround view camera system
Toyota safety sense
Keyless entry/push button start
Toyota connected services app with remote start
Dual zone climate control
Mirror indicator lights with puddle lamps
New instrument cluster
Larger infotainment display with Apple CarPlay
TRD exhaust
Heated Steering wheel!!!!

The price has gone up but at least Toyota added quite a few options.

Pretty much. As the real cost of a vehicle is depreciation, you can't argue the value of Toyota trucks. Even though the prices are going higher and higher, resale values are always very high, so it's easy to just keep rolling that equity into a new vehicle every few years. I wonder how Toyota's resale values will be effected by these new, more complicated, turbo/hybrid setups. Resale values have always been high because of the hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles you could get out of Toyota's V8s and 6 cyl motors. That may not be the case going forward with the new setups, like what is in the Tundra. They are already having problems with the turbos. And then there is the whole hybrid battery pack.

If it's not an insurance claim, there is virtually zero chance it will hit a CarFax report. I wouldn't worry about that at all.

As for the repaint, you're likely to end up with a better/thicker clear coat over the whole thing than it came from the factory with, which is actually a plus. As one other poster noted, getting a high quality ceramic coating is a good move.

the dealer will have freight insurance so actually this probably would show up on the carfax if they tried to claim it. even if there's no repair many times quoted accidents will show up on carfax

my wife's vehicle had a wooden parking garage gate close on her roof. took it for an estimate and it showed up on the carfax even though no claim was made (settled privately). we sold the vehicle long ago with no issues, as long as you have the paperwork it shouldn't be a big deal

Actually, accidents in transit or by the dealers typically don’t appear on Carfax. Have made dozens of claims on my dealer policy over the years, some very major, with nothing reported.

This particular dealer has several dealerships....the Toyota dealership where I bought my 4Runner, a neighboring Subaru dealership and a very large dealership in nearby Conn that sells Ford, Chevy and VW. They have their own Toyota certified collision center at the larger dealership. So they're going to have their collision center do the work. I'm thinking they will just take care of it and not be making some type of insurance claim.

how does that get disclosed to a potential buyer? for example 4runner falls off a truck and needs a lot of cosmetic and mechanical repairs - that would get tracked at the VIN number right?

That was my thought and concern. They may just do it behind the scenes without even creating any work order or anything with the VIN on it. But, I'm not sure the legality of that or what needs to be documented. Also, what if the paint does have issues down the line and there is nothing documented towards the vehicle in regards to the repair? Could get messy.

Again, just playing the role of "fearing the worst." No clue what actually happens and how things get documented to CarFax or other agencies.

The 4Runner went in last Monday for the paint repair. I'm on my way down in a little while to pick it up. Hoping for the best.

Well, my worst fears came true. Salesman texted this morning that it was ready and that he, other salesman and the sales manager walked around it and it looked perfect and that I would be happy. Well, it wasn't even close to perfect. They repainted the lower two thirds of the tailgate and the paint did not match. It was clearly a shade darker on the lower 2/3 of the tailgate. If I stood to the side and looked at an angle, you could clearly see dark shadows all over the lower third. When I opened the tailgate and looked at the bottom 6", I could clearly see a couple of large oval spots that were grey, where you could see the primer showing through. So, not only did the color not match, but they didn't even use enough paint. So what to do now? They said they will send it back to their shop to repair it again but I have zero confidence that they can do it right. I'm thinking of fighting to see if I can take it to my body shop that I know does impeccable work but then I imagine it would turn into an insurance claim and now show up on carfax, which will cost me down the line. I paid MSRP for the vehicle and the dealership has been very accommodating, but now I will have a brand new $58k (with fees and taxes) vehicle that I don't think I even want anymore. I'm thinking that I may just let them try to do a better job at fixing it and then trade it in on a different vehicle.

This is true..depends how much damage though. I imported one of the first Audi TT 225s into Canada in 2001. There was a delay...

As they dropped a shipping container on it and completely crushed it...

Talk to a lawyer and see if this is some form of contractual frustration. If so refuse the vehicle, get a refund or request another new vehicle in its place. I would not go to a non dealer to have it fixed as essentially you will be accepting it as is and assuming responsibility to have it fixed likely on your own dime with them possibly even cancelling your warranty over it.

I gotcha. They say they want to make it right and are gonna take it back to their dealership body shop. I asked to have the body shop manager Cal me and they said that they are gonna take it there and show it to him and then have him call me. Getting another identical vehicle is not an option as they aren't getting anymore Solar octane PROs in. I just have zero confidence in their body shop now.
