A lot depends on whether or not they feel they have leverage over you.

I have gone in with previous cars to a couple local dealers of that brand and just low-key asked them if they would be interested in buying it. "I don't really need it -- thinking of selling". I then ask them to put the offer in writing.

I have found this the perfect way to negotiate (set) trade-in when buying at different dealers. "I have this offer for X from the Toyota dealer down the street". They have met it 100% of the time.

YMMV.

Wow, I can't imagine the audacity of that business establishment! If I were you I'd write a sternly worded letter letting them know just how unacceptable you find their offer!!

Seriously though, the used car market is an absolute shit show right now. Defaults ramping up, costs starting to drop but interest rates at 20 year highs, overpriced inventory and decreasing demand. If you're not happy with the offer go somewhere else. If there's a number you're looking for just cut the bullshit and say it. If you don't want any further negotiations, answer the phone like an adult and say so.

The nerve! Private party KBB value is $40-42k and what I'd expect you to be able to sell it for relatively easily. A non-countered $35,550 is actually a better offer than I would have expected from a dealer as they are always horrifically low. I would have expected closer to $30k. Tell them $38k or no deal. That $2k difference is worth the aggravation of trying to sell it yourself. Selling cars is a pain in the butt and the dealer makes it seamless.

The $48k one sitting on the lot isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Just because they'll post yours for that doesn't mean they are going to get it. Trying to sell yours for that price on your own would be crickets.

This is a nice technique.

Another tactic I have used in the past is is to first negotiate a price for the new car and have them put it in writing. However, do not show up at the dealer with the car you intend to trade in. Tell them you’ll think about it and come back the next day with the vehicle you want to trade and then negotiate a trade. Whatever you do, never try to negotiate the price of a new car and a trade in at the same time. You generally end up on the loosing end.

They had a gray 2019 on lot with 31K and want $47,997, when I told them that they said that one is certified and went through the shop. I told them mine was just inspected by them and had Toyota care service done. They said that is the Auction price for mine, I got up and walked out, they keep calling me but I won't answer or respond to emails. Screw them !
They also showed me a paper with what is costs them to certify and pay for advertising and sit on lot for 30 days. I told them that was just a sales tactic to get trade ins for less money.
The certification is a scam to me. It’s just a way for them to make money. I would tell them to FO too. There a difference between making a reasonable profit margin and ripping people off.

Don’t be afraid to look outside your area. I live in California and bought mine in Denver. Even with the prices of a plane ticket and the cost of gas, food and hotel to drive it back it was still several thousand dollars cheaper than if I bought it from my local dealer.
