Morimoto 2nd Gen XB headlights failure again

I was driving tonight and I realized driver side headlight is dimmer than passenger side. I pulled over and saw that one of the projector bulb is completely dead. This is my second pair. I dont even drive that much. This is my second pair. I love them, but I hate to have something unreliable. They only last a year. That’s unacceptable. Yes they have five years warranty, but I need to replace it every year!? Anyone else had this issue?

That's unfortunate. At the asking price you'd expect them to last a lifetime.

Are these the assemblies? Asking because I'm in the market for new lights and am tossing around my options. Leaning towards a full retrofit over assemblies and your experience makes me want to avoid them.

Unfortunately, your experience is more common than many folks think. One reason aftermarket parts are less expensive than OEM is that they just don't have the same level of quality. And a great warranty doesn't ease the pain much either. (I had Morimoto LED fogs in my Tacoma for 3 years and you don't want to know how many I replaced under warranty.)

If you're wondering where I get my reference data, I recently retired from a Toyota dealership and my son is a Toyota / Lexus Certified Service Technician. The number of times we saw aftermarket parts fail (and sometimes cause collateral damage) was staggering. But most folks believe that aftermarket quality is absolutely the same as OEM.

If you want my advice, if you're looking for something that you won't have to replace every year, go back to OEM lights.

That’s unfortunate. I am at just about one year on the V2 with no issues. Hoping replacement doesn’t become commonplace

Unfortunate to hear your having problems. I read about one other person having a problem with his gen2. My Zenon Deopts have been giving me some issues from time to time and I’ve been really wanting to upgrade to the Morimoto gen2 amber but hesitant due to all the problems with gen 1 and now a couple gen 2’s. To add to my concern I would have to pull the metal bumper off every time there’s a problem. This also requires additional hands, for a headlight.

Same thing. I hate to pull the bumper out and then adjust the beam all over again. I am thinking getting OEM 2021 LED headlights.

Funny you should mention that. See Post #5035 for some cold hard facts and numbers on the OEM LED assemblies. Hint: They're actually pretty darn good.

That sucks man. Have you had 2 Gen 2 failures or a Gen 1 and Gen 2 failure? My Gen 2s have held up fine.... so far.

I know there are posts about this already, is there a guide for switching to OEM 2021 LED headlights? I have a 2016 limited

I went down the morimoto road with my Ram. When I got my 4Runner I knew I would just stick to bulb upgrades. Luckily mine already has LED’s for the low/high beam which are fantastic. Nothing beats the reliability of OEM.
