I’m happy with my 5100’s in front. Also had them on my grand cherokee and like the way they handle on and off road. Def eliminated the nose dive on the t4r.

Having cold feet here - will I be ok running 285s with 1" springs or do I need to get new springs?

I’ve already purchased 1” b12 rear springs and now need to decide on the shocks.
I don’t mind spending extra $ for 6112s but don’t want something I don’t really need. I’m looking for the best ride comfort as I don’t off road at all. I am in snow occasionally but no need for off road capabilities.
I’ve heard the 5100 can be harsh which I want to avoid. I like the ride of stock minus the nose dive.
Thanks in advance

I have a 2022 and wanted to upgrade shocks to something better than stock. My use is also mostly on-road and snow in the mountains. I’ll see little to no off-road, so my priority is on road comfort and control, with enough durability to handle off-roading if required.
After much research, many videos, and some Q&A with different companies, I arrived at Bilstein 6112 front and 5100 rear. I intend to bring the front up about an inch to reduce rake, but I’m not doing a lift. I’m sure the 5100 front would be more than sufficient, but like the idea of the larger diameter front shock piston in the 6112 to provide added dampening and more control + comfort.
Mine should get installed by mid December, so if you’re not in a hurry I’ll report back with first impressions.

Are you getting new tires? I am likely to do the 6112s but depends on if my springs will be tall enough. If I need new springs, I may consider another kit but 6112s look likely.

I bought my rig with a 3/2 spacer lift already installed. It also has 275/70-17 K02’s on TRD wheels. When the Bilstein shocks go on the spacer lift will be removed. I plan to set the 6112’s at 1” up to reduce some rake. I don’t want mine any higher than that.

Bump - will I be good to run 285s with 1” rear lift springs or will I need to get 1.5”?

I installed 5100's on front and back 4 years ago when the OEM shocks were done. The ride has been great, handling good, and I've been very happy with them. However, last week, the left rear rod unscrewed from the lower mount, and the rod extended to full length. I was on a ranch road and had to go 1/2 mile before coming to a flat spot, and the rod was gouging the inside of the wheel that whole time. I had to buy a generic shock from Napa in the small town near the ranch do I could get back home. 4 Wheel Parts is supposed to have the warranty replacement today. I am not super happy about this, as it appears the rod was not welded to the mount, just screwed in.

That’s terrible. I hope it’s the exception and not how they all are.

Oh wow. Thats unfortunate. I know of shocks giving out and busting but I havent seen that before. That said - 4yrs is a pretty decent amount of time right? Or is this a bigger issue than I am thinking of?
Also - are you planning to swamp the 5100s or do you like them enough to purchase again?

I haven't had any issues with the other 3, so I am going to install the free warranty replacement when it gets here. Bilstein has a lifetime warranty on these shocks. The shocks have less than 20,000 miles on them, since the 2 years of pandemic I only put 8000 miles on the car, and was in a van pool before then that greatly reduced my driving.
The rod was screwed into the lower mount, but wasn't welded. I'll be looking at the other rear shock when I get a chance.
