Age old dilemma: 5100 vs 6112
Hi all,
I have a 2017 TRD OR that is in need of some new tires so I’m looking to move up to 285s and replace the shocks.
I’ve already purchased 1” b12 rear springs and now need to decide on the shocks.
I don’t mind spending extra $ for 6112s but don’t want something I don’t really need. I’m looking for the best ride comfort as I don’t off road at all. I am in snow occasionally but no need for off road capabilities.
I’ve heard the 5100 can be harsh which I want to avoid. I like the ride of stock minus the nose dive.
Thanks in advance

I have not tried the 6112's but the 5100's with stock springs on my '19 TRD ORP do not feel harsh at all.

Stock ride minus nose dive is surely not 6112. I'd say neither. I'd pay extra for Fox 2.0 and never look back. Awesome ride (not harsh) great handling and no nose dive.

I put a set of 5100's on my 2021 Trail. I'm about 95% on road and these shocks are much better than stock. Nice firm ride, little dive under braking. I'd do these shock again 100%.

6112's were fantastic for us. i'd definitly go for fox 2.0's though if buying new now.

I can’t justify paying for Fox with what I do, even though I like the idea. Honestly I like the stock ride but it won’t suffice as I’m lifting it a bit. Otherwise I’d keep the stock setup if that were the case.
My only real goal here is to maintain as comfortable of a ride I can with the 1” lift. The only time I ever use 4wd is in the winters when going skiing. I don’t go off-road at all

I honestly wouldn't own another set of Bilsteins. I've had 2 sets of 5100s and I currently have 5160s/6112s. The corrosion preventative coating lasts about a season before looking like complete crap, I've had a spring break on the 6112s and the 5160s lasted about 20k miles before both of them were completely blown. I've replaced the 5100s on our Tundra with the Eibach setup and it's been great for about two years now. I'd go with Old Man Emu any day of the week over anything Bilstein.

Glad to see some love in here for Fox 2.0s. When I was looking to do my lift earlier this year they almost seemed nonexistent on here. Fox now sells a snap ring shock for ~$250 apiece. Pair it with your stock coils and you'll be set. That's what I'd go with if I were you as you can run them 0-2".
FWIW, I've had my Fox 2.0s on since July and I couldn't be happier with them. I went with the full coilover because I may add some weight later and I do some occasional offroading. But, not enough to justify a 2.5" shock or anything more expensive. I also wanted the "stock+" look and didn't want to go crazy which I think these nail at 2" of lift. They ride great on the road. Certainly firmer than stock, but nose dive and body roll are completely under control now. Loaded up in the back is night and day too which helps with Home Depot mulch runs and towing. Being in the northeast, the aluminum bodies was another big selling point for me on the Fox. The Bilsteins would have looked like rusty crap within a year or two I'd imagine. I went from a 1" spacer to the 2" Fox's and it sits very level now. Fox's are also rebuildable, if necessary.
Bilsteins are great for the money, but I really think the Foxs are worth it and are a better shock overall. My .02.
Also, check Amazon for the Fox part numbers. I happened to find mine for $350 apiece down from about $500, so paired with the rear shocks came in right at about $1000. Amazon sellers sometimes liquidate things where they may have one left or something. Just have to be patient.

6112/5160s IMO are one of the best bang for your buck setups. It will handle almost everything the average person throws at it onroad and offroad. I ran mine for about 20k miles before upgrading to custom kings. If Bilstein's aren't for you, you could also look at Dobinsons (hit up Mike at Exit Offroad)

I already have the 1” rear springs from bilstein so does that limit my options?
Again I do not go off road at all. I just want new shocks to accommodate a bigger tire (285) and maintain as much comfort as possible.

You really don't need a lift to fit 285s, especially if you don't offroad. 285's was the first mod I did brand new off the lot; drove 50 miles from the dealership to discount tire on the way home and put 285's on. All you typically need to to is front fender liner mod.

I’d like to lift a tad for a bit of a face lift and more aggressive look. Plus I already have the springs so I need to use them.
