285/75r17s on 2016 Trail 4Runner with Icon Lift / Method NVs

Currently have 275/70r17s KO2 and am looking to get a new set of tires as these have been on for 60k ish miles. Not sure if I want to stick with AT or move to MT. I’m currently looking at COOPER DISCOVERER S/T MAXX AT (only come in 285/70r17), NITTO RIDGE GRAPPLER MT, and BFGOODRICH MUD TERRAIN T/A KM3. I’d love to hear from personal experience with what if anything was required to mount these particular combinations. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions, I’m game. Willing to do BMC if necessary.

Thanks,
Zak

On my 2016 Trail with Nitto RG 275/75 on stock wheels, I had rubbing on the BM and mud flap after cutting away much of the plastic in the well.
This was with 2” Kings and icon UCA. After the BMC I still have slight rubbing at full lock with a bump but only on the after market mud flap and only on the passenger side.
I really like the tires, quiet and grippy but will probably go skinnier next time around. Water has been good as well. Im getting 11.5 to 13 MPG depending on how much freeway I drive.

IMO, I would start with a 285/70-17 to avoid major modifications and an expensive regear to fit 34’s.

The right answer to your question really depends on your use case and what you do with your truck. I've used all of the tires mentioned above except for the KM3s. My use case is heavy off road use on very technical trails. Even with that I still prefer to use ATs with my setup, even with a dedicated offroad vehicle the reality is that you spend a lot of time on pavement. The traction improvements offroad for MTs for me weren't worth the reduction in power, increase in noise and reduction of fuel economy.

If people were more realistic with their use cases and not buying tires for looks I think you would find more people on ATs. Out of the bunch my favorite tire would be the Cooper ST Maxx. Durable, great traction off-road in various conditions: Dry rock, Heavy wet snow, gravel etc. The only drawback was that they were a little noisy as they got older.

My least favorite of the bunch would be the Ridge Grapplers. They were downright dangerous in heavy wet mountain snow, had weak sidewalls and had average traction on rocks. Great highway tire though as they were super quiet.

Right now I'm on 35" BFG KO2s and I miss the offroad traction of the ST Maxx's but I love the quieter ride. So it's a tradeoff. I will most likely switch back to the ST Maxx's once the KO2s wear out.
