2022 SR5 surprised me with its power ...
I was on vacation in Orlando and my rental car was a 2022 Sr5, 4wd with 22,000 miles. What I'm about to say is in comparison to my 2010 Limited with Magnuson Supercharger.
This SR5 was very responsive. The amount of power I felt in acceleration and highway cursing was on par with my supercharged LTD. In addition, this thing was very quiet, much much quieter than my 2010.
The biggest surprise to me was the transmission, never once did it hunt for gears between 4 and 5 at 70 to 75 miles on the freeway. Heck I have the magnuson, TRD intake and magnaflow, plus the sprint booster and the 4 to 5 gear hunt on the slightest incline at highway speeds drives me nuts.
So here are my questions, why was this the case:
I live in Canada, 3500 above sea level. Was the power difference due to me being in Florida?
Limited is awd, was the difference due to RWD vs. awd? Although the rental agreement listed the vehicle as all wheel drive, but I couldn't test this.
Is there an updated transmission tune on the newer 4runners vs. my 2010?
Are the newer 4runners better sound proofed?
For those who might ask, I'm on stock 265-70-17s.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

mostly altitude. If the sr5 was 2wd only then there would also be a significant weight difference. Most rentals seem to be 2wd only.

Um what? On cruise control my 21 TRD downshifts to 4th for a 0.25 degree slope. Or a headwind.
Maybe I need to buy a 22.

No, this one was 4WD. It had a dial 4wd selector similar to my limited.

I'm not kidding. This thing purred and was so smooth. One of the things with my own truck, I always feel something is stock in its throat, that it needs to breed more freely. Not with this SR5, it felt so free flowing.

Contrary to all the naysayers, I've always thought my 2019 TRDOR was responsive. 0-60 in 7.5 seconds is what the road testers say it does. While that won't win you many races, it's not slouchy for a vehicle like this. And, I won my only drag race with it when I beat a Honda Accord Sport with the turbo, who was bent on cutting me off at a stoplight. He couldnt ;-D

Definitely a difference in altitude. At 5k ft there’s like a second of delay from when I mash the throttle and when the 4Runner decides to move.

silly question but: 3500' or 3500m?
remember too, florida is also pancake flat.
i came from a 1975 4.2 2f, to a 22re 5pd, to a 2000' 3.4 to this 4.0 beast... i'll never think it's slow.

Jumps off the line
Have Pizza cutter mud tires that are very heavy, dont have booster or anything like that. While my 4Runner may not be so fast on the straight away, it seems to jump off the line at any light.
Which is great, love the low-end torque from starting at a stop.

I hear you. My first car was a 67 VW with 53 HP. I was as slow as loaded semis up hills, screaming in third gear from the right lane.

BKRunner, are you okay?

BKRunner are you ok?
Will you tell us that you're ok?
But really they're just ok. It's just barely enough to edge out a 4 banger Camry SE that thought it was a sports car.

Having driven both a 2011 and 2014 Limited, there are definitely refinements in the 2014 that the 2011 doesn't have.
The 2014 definitely has more sound deadening material. I think they changed the throttle mapping as well. I have to push the pedal down more in my 2011 than I do in the 2014. I'd imagine these both continued forward since 2014.
With the vehicle this long in the tooth, Toyota may have dialed in the transmission programming more since, if I remember right, it's a different ECU in the 2020+ 4Runners. But other than that, same engine, same transmission, same body, same weight, I can't imagine the 22 is any quicker. If it feels that way my guess is the change in throttle mapping.
