Off-brand rear bumper cover

Everyone loves a picture, so here's my predicament...need a new bumper cover.

The OEM bumpers aren't prohibitively expensive themselves, but damn, the shipping rates in some places exceed the cost of the bumper cover itself, pushing the total cost > $500. Of course, there's the follow-on paint expense.

I can get some non-OEM replacements off Amazon, as well as other places, much cheaper, but do these normally fit well with similar quality? I know "under the hood" aftermarket parts can be a crap shoot...never had to consider after market body parts.

Thanks

Not for Toyota, but I have bought after market bumper covers for other cars with good results. One of the benefits is the places that sell them will often paint them to your color code which saves you having to have that done.

I replaced the front bumper cover on my daughter's Mazda 3. The part came folded in a box and unfolded perfectly after sitting in the sun for an hour. The expensive part was paint- body shops wanted $500+ to paint it. I ended up buying SprayMax 2K aerosol paint and clearcoat and did it myself. It came out ok, only cost me $100 for the paint, but if you look close the texture doesn't match. This is fine for a college student car, but your 4R is nearly new and probably worth $40K, so putting a little extra into painting to match is worth it.

Hi DEF4Runner...,

I had a very similar accident three yrs ago involving the rear bumper cover; I was devastated at the sight of my (now old...), beloved 2012 4Runner Limited, in that condition... ! When I went to my local body shop up the street, it wasn't so bad!

The part (Bumper cover; NON After Mkt) cost: $259.97, labor+painting: (my Deductable cost), $895.95 (...including All pts)! Here's the phone# for the Toyota pts distributor: ABC Parts International Inc. Mineola NY, 516/248-4900 and 516/248-5079,

Hope this helps mate! ~rig~ cheers

Thanks for the replies!

I've called about a half dozen collision shops in my area and most won't touch the bumper unless they source the parts and provide all of the removal/installation labor. All of them state this is to comply with their warranty policies. I found 1...a dealer associated body shop...who is willing to just paint an OEM (only) bumper for about $720. That's just to walk out the door with a painted bumper in my hands. $450 for a little over 5 hours of labor and $265 in supplies.

Does that sound a bit steep?

^^^ For $360 painted, that seems like a good deal. I'm not sure if that is a folded or non-folded version though.

That is for an SR5 which probably won't fit your 4Runner ('20 Off Road?). I posted that to show that painted ones are available. You need to do your own search for your specific year, model and trim level. Google and Amazon search are your friends.

it will fit just fine. you just won't be able to use the valence without cutting the holes. I would leave it off if I didn't have the holes cut already. and you would have to find the trim for around the hitch if it didn't come with it. the rear valence is kind of dumb IMO

I've used MBI auto on eBay multiple times for pre-painted bumpers. They send them folded and painted. I've only used it on older cars (10+ years) and always had pretty good success outside of a color mismatch on a white Highlander. The car had 200+k miles on it and was in pretty rough condition, so I didn't worry about it. I recently bought a front bumper cover for my Dad's 2014 Tacoma in magnetic grey and it is excellent quality. When we hit a deer with my wifes 2018 CB PRO and ruined the front bumper cover, I replaced it with an OEM bumper and paid a guy in the Toyota body shop a couple hundred in cash to paint it. It came out perfect as well and I only had about $500 in the bumper. The install on the rear bumper is a piece of cake.

Body shops don't want the hassle of dealing with customer supplied parts if something happens down the road where a warranty claim is needed. I'm lucky that a buddy of mine owns a shop and is willing to paint one off items like valences, lip kits, etc. Case in point, the lip I bought from Amazon for my Lexus GS is of real crap quality and he's had to repaint it three times now because the paint wouldn't adhere. This is while he's also painting a new OEM front bumper after an accident, which took to the paint just fine.

$450 for 5 hours of labor is about the going rate considering the prep time and paint. I wouldn't scoff at this.

Same, ordered 2 different painted ones off of Ebay Motors and had good results with both paint matches

Thanks again for all the replies. I looked at some of the paint-to-order sites and there's options for the SR5, but not the OR.

Believe it or not, the local dealer hooked me up. With my military discount, I walked out the door with an OEM for $250. I still need to get it painted though.

Two places in this area are willing to paint just parts:
1) The dealer associated body shop mentioned above. $700 is a bit steep but of the two, they are the only one who wanted to see the 4R to match the paint. The bad part is that they can't get to it until the end of February. I feel pretty confident I'll leave with a factory similar paint job though.
2) Mom and Pop place a few miles down the road will do it for $500. They didn't seem interested in seeing the truck for any matching, just as long as I provided the color code. They've been around for about 50 years, so they must be doing something right. A bonus is that they can get it done in a couple of weeks. I do, however, get a feeling it might just be on par with Earl Scheib, MAACO, or rattle can.

I'll sit on it for a bit while it's a bazillion degrees below zero right now to ponder which one I'll use.

For $700 buy yourself a compressor, some spray tips and primer plus paint and clear coat and go for it.
