Recommended Improvments for New 2022 4runner

Hello guys,

I want to start customizing my new 2022 4runner ORP . Its at 6k miles i took it thru some medium trails and loved it. Nothing at night yet or any advanced trails which honestly im fine without now.

Right now I have 2 questions..

1. Should I upgrade myt suspension in my ORP? Get it lifted a bit more? I think it also looks cooler too (im young i like my car to be functional and look cool if it can )
2. I want to add lights to the front of the car. Before adding lights I was thinking of adding a Metal bumper with a guard underneath. Any recommendations please?

3. Also any other part recommendations to fit my functional + asthetic needs would be warmly welcomed

Stuff I was looking at...

1. Overland Front Bumper | Backwoods Adventure Mods
2. Morimoto Toyota 4-Runner XB LED Headlights with Amber DRL; Black Housing; Clear Lens LF531H (21-23 4Runner w/ Factory LED Low/LED High Beam Headlights) - Free Shipping

Thank you!

1. I would ask to have this moved to the 5th gen forum. The gen discussions forum isn't the right place.
2. I wouldn't do any upgrades until you've taken it offroad enough to know that they are necessary.

Just for some general information:
  • A new front bumper will require a new suspension set up to manage the weight. Even a hybrid bumper will need new springs at a minimum.
You're looking at an easy $5,000 if you do a full front bumper and a decent suspension and have someone else install it.
  • Why put a front bumper on if you don't need a winch? A winch weights an additional 70lbs or more - hanging off your front end.
  • Your MPG will tank when you put on a front bumper and lift it - even worse when you add a winch. Expect <15mpg.
  • If you lift it, will you put bigger tires on it? If so, expect your brakes to have to last about half as long as they would with oem size tires.
  • If you're not going to put bigger tires on, whats the point of lifting it?
  • Do you have KDSS? If so, I highly recommend a progressive damping suspension or at a minimum linear - these can't be had cheaply.
  • As for lights, why do you need them?

I know its fun to look at all these slickly built out 4Runners and it gives you GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) but if you're not going to put your 4R in situations where you actually need all this gear, what you're actually doing is making the driving experience worse.

From someone that built his out and then slowly has pulled it back to closer to stock, trust me. Build it when you realize you NEED it, not just to make it look cool while you drive around town.

This is very good advice. Although when I was young I would have been deaf to it.

A bumper without a lift would be silly. Same as spending $1500 for headlights when I'd assume you already have the factory LEDs (my opinion. The look of aftermarket headlights is also not for me.)

$1500 can be spent on a good set of tires and partner that with a good couple inch lift and you'll have all the capability you'll need. I went with Fox 2.0s F/R which is just 2" lift in the front and went with a 285/70r17 AT tire. I'm a moderate four wheeler and have no intention of going any bigger or doing anything harder. It's plenty capable and drives great still on the street all for a couple thousand bucks. There are tons of suspension options out there in the moderately priced to crazy priced range. Even the moderately priced ones like Bilstein 5100s or Eibach Pro Truck are pretty great for the $$$. I'm not going to give tire advice because it will turn into one of THOSE threads... of which there are hundreds of. you can do your research there.

For extra light, throw some ditch lights on. Cheap and easy mod that will be useful. You take your pick based on budget. They can go cheap to yowza as well.

I'm a big fan of the Stock + look, onroad driveability, and offroad capability model.

Hell. I'm in my 40s and didn't listen to the same advice. LOL

If he has KDSS he should stay away from the Bilsteins and definitely avoid the Eibachs. Digressive does not equal a nice ride when combined with KDSS.

My recommendation is like others said to drive and see how you're actually going to use it before committing to potentially unneeded mods. Especially a bumper. I'd wait till you damaged your existing bumper cover to consider a full replacement bumper.
And if you're doing a bumper you should do sliders. Oh and a full set of skids too. And while you're at it a rear bumper, roof rack, RTT, etc etc.

Gotta keep the aftermarket gear and oil and gas industries in business!

Just remember, Your 3 year 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty may be affected by any lifts and mods done to the vehicle. You may have to restore it to original oem specs for any warranty issues. Your local Toyota dealer may offer to lift your vehicle and honor the warranty, its up to him. Good luck with the 22 T4R....cheers

Categorically untrue. The only thing that wouldn't be covered is what was modified - ie. the suspension in this case. This has been discussed ad nauseam on this and other forums.

Yes. You feel every little bump and it rattles the hell out of the truck. It is intolerable on washboards unless you're going under 12mph so the sway bars disconnect.
