Phone hands-free bluetooth sound coming out of driver door speaker only?

This is on a 2011 SR5. Whenever a phone call comes in over bluetooth, the audio from the caller is only played through one speaker on the driver's door and it's really tough to hear/understand the audio. Is this a setting or functioning as intended? If it's functioning as intended, can I replace the head unit with a newer aftermarket to get the phone audio on all speakers?

Some radios have separate audio settings for each source: AM, FM, XM satellite radio, CD, etc. Bluetooth is included as one of those sources. If all your other sources sound comes from all the speakers, my guess is that the audio setting left/right balance for Bluetooth is adjusted all the way to the left side.

2011 might have the old phone profile like the 2004-09 Prius Bluetooth where the phone calls really did only come through the driver speaker - by (negligent) design.

This is before A2DP (stereo Bluetooth) was implemented. These radios couldn’t stream Bluetooth so phone calls, being mono, were panned hard left with no way to fix it.

This is what I am thinking. I'm curious if I replace the headunit with a new one that has wireless carplay, would the phone call audio play from all speakers or is the issue more deeply rooted into the system. I'm surprised I'm not reading anything about it on the internet outside of some Prius forums (like you mentioned) and some Tacoma forums.
