Another Suspension Knocking Post

Hi, all. I have searched the forum and online, but have not come up with a satisfactory answer, so apologies in advance about yet another suspension-related knocking post.

'22 ORP with KDSS, 3,500 miles, purchased new in September. When going over uneven pavement or a series of bumps, I am getting a knocking sound from (I believe) the rear of the vehicle. It seems to be more noticeable when the speed is 15 mph or so, and sometimes when turning left. It sounds like a suspension component - it's not just one "clunk", but a knocking sound, almost like the spare tire or something is loose. (I checked the spare - it is not.) Lower temperatures (32F and lower) seem to make it worse.

Any suggestions for my visit to the dealer's service department?

Are the jack and its toolkit strapped tight?

Are the grease points lubricated on the rear drive shaft?

If you added a lift. is the KDSS swaybar touching the panhard bar?

Jack and toolkit are tight. No lift - all stock. It’s only a little over 3 months old, but I can check the grease fittings on the rear driveshaft. It sounds like something knocking back and forth a couple of times in the scenario described.

I also hear this clunking noise particularly when it's very cold. I also have not been able to identify the source. I sounds exactly like a loose jack in the back, but everything is tight back there. My 4Runner is a stock ORP with no KDSS.

Can you try to maybe take the jack and components out and see if the "clunk" is still there to narrow it down. Then maybe take off the spare and see if you still hear a noise? Sometimes process of elimination will narrow it down.

Similar issue in front

I was just about to ask about a similar issue I am having but it is with the front . When it is cold and driving after sitting for a while it sounds like maybe shock tops or something. Thats from my previous experience with noises in the automotive service side with cars. Maybe there is something to do with your rear shocks.

if your vehicle is stock, take it to the dealer for warrantee work.

I still have not been able to track down the sound, but after paying closer attention, it sounds like it is coming from the front suspension. I re-read a few posts, and it seems that the problem areas could be upper control arm/lower control arm bolts, or the sway bar bushings. It seems unlikely with a new vehicle, but at least this is somewhere to start to check when it goes to the dealer.

While you are there have them make sure your prop shafts are lubed, mine were about dry when I got my clunk solved. Seems some are never lubed from the factory.

I would check you sway bar bushings.

make sure the battery is tight. i had a knock as well, turned out to be the battery tie downs were loose. if you wheel alot this will happen as the hooks will elongate the hole in the mount, letting the nuts loosen up.
